🌿 During the recent 3rd Sustainable Vegetable Oils Conference in Rotterdam, Netherlands, our Head of Europe and LatAm, Maarten van der Hoeven, shared key insights on the future of #sustainability across the vegetable oil sector: 📈 Rising Demand, Big Opportunity: With vegetable oil demand expected to rise by up to 50% to meet global population growth, sustainable practices are now more important than ever. Whether it is palm, sunflower, or other vegetable oils, we all have something to learn from each other to collectively improve and capture this big opportunity to strike a balance between food security and sustainability. 🔍 Leveraging Technology for Greater Transparency: Embracing technology is key to advancing sustainability in the vegetable oil sector. By adopting successful innovations from other industries, like blockchain, we unlock new opportunities for greater transparency and accountability. One example is our blockchain-powered GAR Traceability Platform, which provides end-to-end traceability across our supply chain. This not only gives our customers confidence in the sustainable origins of our products, but also highlights our ability to meet regulatory requirements, such as the EUDR. 👩🌾 Empowering Smallholders: Smallholders are the backbone of vegetable oil production – in Indonesia, for example, they account for around 41% of palm oil production. To make sure they are not left behind in the shift towards sustainability, the entire vegetable oil sector must focus on empowering these farmers. Initiatives like our Sawit Terampil programme, which equips smallholders with the skills to farm more sustainably while boosting their productivity, are vital for forging a more inclusive and sustainable agriculture industry. To learn more about our sustainability efforts and how we’re meeting #EUDR requirements, visit: https://bit.ly/4ebKKKu.

From the field to the table, we are proud to share that Barilla Group, a global icon of Made in Italy food products, digitalises its entire basil supply chain together with EIT Food Accelerator Network alumnus xFarm Technologies. xFarm Technologies is a tech company that aims to digitalise the agribusiness sector, providing innovative tools to support agricultural entrepreneurs and stakeholders in managing their businesses. xFarm Technologies today supports the work of 300,000 farms, belonging to more than 50 supply chains and present on 3 million hectares in more than 100 countries around the world. Thanks to its blockchain technology, Barilla will be able to guarantee maximum transparency to end consumers. The ultimate goal of the digitalisation is provide consumers with a kind of "basil identity card". It will be possible to know where the basil was grown. Blockchain technology will guarantee the authenticity of each piece of information, allowing consumers to be sure of the origin, journey and freshness of Barilla basil. The main objectives of this joint project with Barilla are the calculation of emissions, full traceability and efficiency along the supply chain. The project, which started in 2023 with an initial pilot phase, now fully operational, is also dedicated to making life easier for the farmers. The digitalisation involves all 25 companies and cooperatives that supply basil, the main ingredient of Barilla's famous Pesto line, covering 310 hectares of land. Thanks to the new technological infrastructure developed by xFarm Technologies, the farms supplying basil will be able to track all the primary data relating to the land, archiving it on Barilla's Farming platform, effectively calculating the impact of each individual farm, including environmental parameters, such as carbon footprint, water footprint, acidification and eutrophication. "Our collaboration with Barilla has a long history, starting in 2020 with the development of the Barilla Farming platform and the digitalisation of the soft wheat supply chain. We are therefore proud to be able to extend the scope of digitalisation also to another important supply chain, such as that of pesto, one of the company's flagship products and a key symbol of the Italian agri-food industry." Matteo Vanotti, CEO of xFarm Technologies. Congratulations to Matteo Vanotti, Salvatore Ferullo, Matteo Cunial, Giuseppe Manzione, the entire xFarm Technologies team and everyone involved. #foodsystemtransformation #agrifoodtechinnovation #startupacceleration

"Millets and the Environment" is a solid introduction to the topic, including sustainability, water conservation, and biodiversity. It also touches on farming systems, food security, and nutrition and health benefits. This piece, dated 5 Dec. 2023, is offered by TraceX Technologies, an India-based company, one of whose business lines is a "blockchain enabled" traceable supply chain platform. As traceability and identity preservation become more important in food and agriculture, it is important to follow how those relate to the diverse #millets in North American markets. Some of those millets of course are produced in the countries of this region (notably proso, sorghum & teff), while others come as food products from countries in other regions, with India being one of the primary sources (such as for pearl, finger, little, kodo, and barnyard). https://lnkd.in/gmxmXkQt
