What an eye-opening discussion at the session “Leveling the Playing Field: Equity in Evaluation for Black Non-Profit Organizations” for ABFE 2024. Thank you @Tina Fletcher, @Wiselene Dorceus, @Endaisia Love for sharing your insights and experience. The conversation centered around evaluating and improving the impact of nonprofit organizations through a more inclusive lens, including the oft-underexplored importance of understanding the cultural context when considering the need for alignment with equitable practices. Without a frank addressing of these issues, we risk isolating this vibrant and crucial segment of the broader non-profit community. I hope to see this dialogue continued and would welcome any tips or insights into how anyone reading with experience in this area builds their own playbook for success to support non-profit organizations providing key support to Black communities. A better future starts with a better understanding of what it means to include. #NonprofitImpact #InclusiveEvaluation #SupportingBlackCommunities

As we're sure you've heard, the order freezing all federal payments has been rescinded... and yet, problems still exist for orgs attempting to access the funds they are rightfully owed. BEDAD is working with local and statewide advocacy groups to ensure the interests of black non-profit leaders are represented in the conversation. Most importantly, BEDAD is focused on ensuring the interests of children, youth, and families are at the center of this conversation. This isn't about winning a battle or war. This is about creating a community where those who need the most, get the most, and the voices of those closest to the problems are viewed as the experts in crafting the solutions. Folks, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Take care of yourself because your leadership is critical to the work. #wearebedad #detroit #executiveexcellence #blackexcellence #blacksuperhero #equitymatters #nonprofit #kidsmatterhere #howarethechildren #GSD #makeithappen

I received an email sharing some eye-opening stats that highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Black-led, Black-benefitting organizations. As a Black founder of a non-profit, I understand firsthand the crucial work needed to address these disparities. In honor of Black Philanthropy Month this August, I invite you to support Freedom In Me Business Showers and our mission to empower small businesses. Every contribution, regardless of size, makes a difference. Visit www.businessshowers.org to donate today! Key stats to consider: - Only 1% of community foundation funding goes to Black-led, Black-benefitting organizations - 76% of these nonprofits operate on less than $500K annually, with a third surviving on just $30K per year - 92% of BLBB nonprofit leaders have lived experience - 43% operate without full-time paid staff - 86% face challenges accessing major funders Let's work together to bridge these gaps and create a more equitable future for all. #BlackPhilanthropyMonth #SupportSmallBusinesses #Equality #NonprofitImpact

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are more than just buzzwords—they are fundamental principles that should guide the operations and culture of every #nonprofit organization. When DEI is woven into the fabric of a nonprofit, it enhances the organization’s effectiveness and ensures that its mission resonates with a broader, more diverse community. For nonprofit leaders, fostering a culture that values and promotes #DEI is essential to creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute to the organization's goals. If churches are going to build a culture of generosity, then pastors and leaders must begin to understand what's driving our Millennial and GenZ members--How do they see the world? What drives their generosity? On January 28, I'll lead a conversation about Understanding and Engaging Millennial and GenZ givers. If you lead a church or a non-profit this will help you rethink how you effectively link your ministry with the generosity of these generations. https://lnkd.in/gsgp-TMD

During our virtual summit last week, Angela Meleca, Chief Advocate Officer for Meleca Consulting talked about her mission to more clearly communicate the distinct public value of arts organizations. She shared this advice for all #nonprofit leaders: "If you know in your gut that the work you are called to do is contributing to providing a better community, don’t wait for someone else to give you permission to get started." Last week I attended this fascinating webinar from Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) which shared research on how effective we can be in reaching Gen Z (& varying generational audiences) with our language and messaging. A few takeaways to keep in mind for our impact-storytelling work moving forward: ✨ The word "freedom" is equally motivating for younger & older generations. ✨ "Community" (helping others) strongly resonates across generations. ✨ "Bridging" and "Bipartisanship" are the lowest ranking civic terms for Gen Z. As one of the presenters noted, “Perhaps the fact that there are limited examples of bipartisanship and bridging prevents a conception and understanding of the term.” 👏🏻 Challenge accepted!
WEBINAR TODAY: Join over 100+ funder and non-profit leaders at 2pm ET to explore how Gen Z perceives civic language. Here's a sneak peek: PACE found that Gen Z is more likely than other generations to think that equity-focused civic terms bring people together. Register here: https://lnkd.in/emU9wsuY

What would be possible for our relationships and communities if we courageously address the topics we've been avoiding? Successful movements require challenging conversations - what would be possible if we could get through those moments in a generative and loving way? What does it look like to have some of the conversations we’ve been avoiding or are afraid to have? This two-part series is on difficult conversations and centered around principle #6 of the Community Centric Fundraising principles. These transformative workshops will take place on: May 23rd and June 6th, from 10 - 12pm PST. Many of us shy away from challenging conversations, fearing potential strain on relationships with donors, colleagues, or friends. As a result, embracing this principle often proves to be one of the most daunting yet impactful steps in our journey. To enact meaningful change, we must confront the characteristics of white supremacy culture that perpetuate fear of conflict, perfectionism, and the pressure to always be "nice." By shattering our fragility, we unlock the path to liberation and authentic connection. Join Shireen Muri and Fluer Larson for an opportunity to embark on this deeply personal and professionally transformative journey. This workshop is open to all nonprofit white staff, not just those directly in fundraising. Together, let's commit to the hard but necessary emotional labor of becoming more reliable allies in service to justice and equity. A Workshop on Community Centric Fundraising Principle #6 Dates: Thursday May 23rd and June 6th 10am - 12pm PST virtual all sessions recorded https://ow.ly/aiK350RCgSK *While this isn’t an intro to CCF we welcome white folks who are on a journey around anti-racism work. #CCF #fundraising #nonprofits #washingtonstate
