We have a nature and climate emergency. We have legal targets to urgently halt the decline of biodiversity and restore large areas of habitat, as well as cut emissions. We have to tackle these crises together, not least because intact ecosystems are what keeps our planet liveable. It cannot therefore be ok to destroy some of our most precious and irreplaceable nature sites and wildlife with a giant CCS pipeline. Read our open letter and thanks to the media for great coverage of this issue. #SolentCO2pipeline

🌍 European forests cover nearly 40% of the continent, serving as irreplaceable ecosystems that are crucial for our survival: 🔋 Carbon storage: These forests capture about 30% of global CO₂ emissions, acting as vital carbon sinks in the battle against climate change. However, with up to one-third of Europe’s tree species—such as maple and chestnut—at risk of becoming unsuited to future climates, this natural defense is under threat. 🌿 Biodiversity conservation: Home to an incredible range of biodiversity, including rare and endangered species, our forests are at risk. The potential loss of species could disrupt these ecosystems, reducing their ability to support life and store carbon. 🌡️ Climate regulation: Forests help regulate local temperatures and precipitation, mitigating global warming. As climate change accelerates, the very species that perform these functions may no longer thrive in their native regions. 💧 Water resource protection: Forests are critical in preserving our water quality and quantity, safeguarding watersheds, and sustaining rivers. The loss of resilient species could destabilize these essential services. 🚨 The threats are real and growing: Poor management, deforestation, wildfires, and invasive species all exacerbate the dangers to Europe’s forests. Forest managers must adopt more flexible and innovative strategies, including species diversification and sustainable practices. At ClimateSeed, our Forestry and Land Use projects are dedicated to promoting adaptive strategies, enhancing ecosystem health, and contributing to carbon sequestration and avoidance, and biodiversity protection. As ever, a well-thought-through, solid assessment of a well-intentioned but commercially driven solution to the ecological crisis we are deep into. Don't destroy irreplaceable habitats should be on the checklist right? Nature-based solutions are the answer. Nature can heal all if we take the time to listen and respond to it. #LetsSupportNatureToGetWhereWeNeed #HowCanTheSeaBedsHelpCaptureCarbon #30x30 #NatureBasedSolutions

Species conservation is a cornerstone of ecosystem resilience. Every species, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. Protecting them ensures the survival of entire ecosystems that provide essential services like clean air, water, and food. Without biodiversity, ecosystems become fragile, making them vulnerable to climate change and human impacts. https://lnkd.in/guM2swbA The Nature Conservancy

Dbytes #613 (27 March 2024) Info, news & views for anyone interested in biodiversity conservation and good environmental decision making “doom and gloom messaging was the absolute worst for motivating action and among the worst for changing climate change beliefs or support for climate change policies. Old-growth #forests are crucial in the fight against climate change, serving as vital ecosystems that help maintain ecological balance and biodiversity worldwide. However, these forests face significant threats from logging and degradation, exacerbated by pressures from agriculture, urban expansion, and industrialization. Efforts by various #administrations to enhance protection for old-growth forests offer hope for global conservation endeavors, but more proactive measures are urgently needed to safeguard these ecosystems. Studies consistently highlight the immense carbon-sequestering capacity of mature forests, underscoring their importance in mitigating #climate change impacts. Furthermore, the #preservation of old-growth forests is essential for safeguarding biodiversity and protecting habitats for threatened species. Despite the clear benefits of conservation, challenges persist due to conflicting interests and inadequate regulatory frameworks. #Policymakers worldwide must prioritize forest conservation and adopt #sustainable land management practices to curb deforestation and promote reforestation efforts. Public awareness and community engagement are also crucial for garnering support and ensuring the long-term preservation of these invaluable #ecosystems. In conclusion, old-growth forests represent a global concern that demands immediate attention. By protecting these ecosystems, we can combat climate change effectively and set examples for sustainable development #worldwide . The time to act is now to preserve our planet's most cherished treasures for future #generations.
