CEO PSS Weinkellerei and Weingut Pieroth GmbH

The #wineindustry is facing major challenges - and equally major opportunities. One of the key issues is sustainability. For PSS Weinkellerei GmbH and myself, this is not a fashion trend, but a deeply rooted conviction. It guides our decisions and shows how we can actively take responsibility for the future. Bottle equipment plays a decisive role in this. Traditionally, heavy glass bottles are seen as a symbol of quality - but this perception comes at a price: higher production and transportation costs, high consumption of raw materials and energy. At the same time, awareness of the ecological impact is growing: More and more producers are turning to lighter glass bottles to reduce their CO₂ footprint - without compromising on design. Innovative bottle finishes go one step further: more sustainable, recyclable or even reusable. Personally, I'm still skeptical about crown corks as a closure - but things are moving in this direction too. Corks remain a topic close to my heart: a renewable raw material with a positive carbon footprint. By using corks, our winery can help to bind around 500 tons of CO₂ every year. Although aluminum closures or capsules are cheaper and often desired, they are energy-intensive to produce and can only be recycled to a limited extent. Wine has a future - but it needs more commitment: 👉 Change in awareness: a lighter bottle does not mean less value, but more responsibility. 👉 Promoting innovation: From recycled glass to alternative materials - research offers exciting approaches. 👉 Strengthen the circular economy: Glass recycling must be intensified and cycles closed. As an industry, we have the opportunity - and the responsibility - to make sustainable decisions that really make a difference. What do you think? Where do you stand on these issues? I look forward to your input! 👇 #Wine #Sustainability #Glassbottles #Innovation #Responsibility
