Let's make Earth Day real, by taking action ourselves, and not waiting on governments or corporations to do the right thing, which looking at the figures certainly hasn't happened in the past few decades. In 1976 worldwide were used around 50 million tonnes of plastic, today the figure is more than 300 million tonnes! So we need a far greater ambition than a 60% reduction. We need a 5 to 10 fold reduction. If you are in a supermarket today, then let today be the first day, you return the plastic packaging, which you did not want to the supermarket before you leave, give me a clear message we do not want this. With supermarkets and many other businesses, openly stating that multipack items have increased their revenue, thus wrapping items in plastic is beneficial for the shareholders, not the environment! The only way we can make a difference is by rejecting the packaging, and if nothing else imagine the news tomorrow morning stating that 10,000 people have just removed the packaging of a pack of apples that did not need to be wrapped in plastic because we have had enough. My mission is always to look at actions rather than talk, to show that together we have the numbers, we can make policies as long as we act in alignment as one big voice. #plasticwaste #plastic #foodwaste #action #environment #choice

Bye-bye, plastic inserts! In North America, Amazon is switching from plastic air pillow cushioning in its packaging to recycled paper. It says paper "just works better" and secures items in shipping cases just the same, if not better. It has already replaced 95% of the air pillow cushions with paper filler in North America and is working toward complete removal by year's end. The paper, made from 100% recycled content, is also curbside recyclable.-- https://bit.ly/3zl3xDi Congrats from Mid America Paper Recycling on the eco-friendly move! We offer plenty of recycling value-creation insights we can share with you. www.midamericapaper.com #growingtheworthofyourwaste #recyclingmatters #b2brecyclingservicesChicago #industrialrecycling #commercialrecycling #closingtheloop #corrugatedrecycling #plasticrecycling #landfilldiversion

We live in a plastic world. :( Conventional plastic can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose, with the average supermarket bag needing around 20 years and a plastic bottle around 450 years. #conservation #recycling #sustainability

Amazon's recent switch is eliminating an estimated 15 billion plastic air pillows from their packaging each year! With 95% of these plastic air pillows already replaced with paper filler in North America, Amazon aims for complete removal by the end of the year. This is a commendable first step, but there is more to be done. Amazon should continue prioritizing the elimination of single-use problematic packaging, such as plastic mailing sleeves, bubble mailers, and excessive plastic film wraps on products for shipping. How cool would it be to see a way to return and collect this packaging to reduce the amount of packaging (plastic or not...) altogether? It's great to see a giant like Amazon tackling sustainability at scale and a reminder how impactful businesses can be when they set meaningful plastic and waste reduction goals and hold themselves accountable to these targets. Not only does this show leadership within the industry, it demonstrate to consumers their commitment to sustainability and plastic reduction. #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #Amazon #PlasticReduction #GreenPackaging #EnvironmentalResponsibility https://lnkd.in/dD423RSd

In our incremental drive to reduce plastic packaging we’re delighted to have saved 66KG of plastic alone in 2023 by redesigning how we ship our popular v sweeper, which effectively picks up dust and dirt off hardflooring up and down the country. OK, it’s only a small step but when we add up all of our plastic savings it comes to hundreds of tonnes a year now! We know that there’s no one single change that can get us there, but it’s about making many smaller adjustments in how we operate and interact with the environment around us that will make a difference! ♻️ #reduce #plastic #waste

Came across this post on the underground. Yes this is absolutely true but we can’t rely on the government to make all the difference. If we made little changes to our everyday lives, these little differences will make a big impact. Little differences such as using a resuable water bottle and a resuable cotton bag might feel small but the average person buys 156 plastic bottles a year and 150 plastic bags. Worldwide this equates to 500 billion plastic bottles and and 5 trillion plastic bags. If individually we reduced our consumption, we are talking about the reduction of trillions of tons of plastic in our eco-system. Just a little thing to think about.
