#DES providers, have you heard about the Practitioners’ Forum, being held on the ‘pre-day’ before our Conference – 11 June at Grand Hyatt, Melbourne? It's brought to you in partnership with our great friends at genU Training, with whom we are co-developing our Disability Employment Fundamentals series of industry-led microcredentials. This is not the first DEA Practitioners’ Forum, but it is the first in a while. Why are we bringing it back? 1. The Disability Royal Commission has recommended that greater priority is placed on practitioner skills within DES. Anticipating that recommendation, we are keen to offer organisations greater opportunities to engage with continuing professional development. 2. Alongside our partners, we want to lead the drive towards professionalism and recognition of practitioner skills within #disabilityemployment. We believe that it is much better that such initiatives are driven from the sector than central government fiat, so DEA is keen to build our relationship with practitioners and the frontline. This will be encapsulated by our Professional Members Program (about which more soon, we promise) but opportunities for practitioners to get together, network, and learn in a group setting are a big part of that too. There will of course be CPD points attached to attendance at the Forum. 3. We recognise that staff turnover is a big issue, particularly at a time of uncertainty, and there are always temptations for front-liners to move to other (frequently better paid) jobs. One way DEA can help is to show your practitioners that they are part of a greater whole, re-emphasise the good that they do, and demonstrate that they really can build a great, fulfilling #career in this sector. 4. It’ll be fun! We’ve put together a program that encapsulates these aims – including a keynote about goal-setting from multi-gold-winning Paralympian Matt Levy OAM, a panel about different career paths in the sector, an interactive session on quality servicing led by genU Training’s Daniel Gavin, DISC profiling facilitated by the Institute of Capacity Building’s Lauren Amy Peacock MIEP, and Paul Diviny FIEP of Prospert will be upskilling practitioners on how to use business intelligence to support their participants to get jobs. It’ll be led by the wonderful Wayne Herbert MAICD FIEP as MC, who himself has built an amazing career within the sector – so there is no one better to prove our point. The event is mainly aimed at practitioners or those close to the front-line. I see it as a great opportunity to build up and reward up-and-coming talent, as well as those who have shown outstanding commitment over a long period. We’ve tried to keep the price as low as possible because we want to maximise engagement, and we think $300 is a bargain for a half-day’s high-quality #training, with #networking opportunities and refreshments thrown in! In the disability employment sector, some people get put in the too-hard basket. People with mid-life injuries and/or mental health conditions, for example. Or women who’ve been caregivers and have a decade-long gap in experience. It’s no wonder someone might start to believe there is no hope: 🔶Feeling useless 🟢Believing that their best years are behind them 🟥Worrying their skills are obsolete 🔷Not understanding how to present their skills 🟡Not knowing what steps to take In the workshops I deliver with Disability Employment Australia on finding work for the long-term unemployed and unlocking intrinsic motivation I help practitioners build hope and help their participants recognise their existing skills. One of these activities uses divergent/ creative thinking. Practitioners learn to coach participants through a series of ‘what if’ scenarios that help them understand how their interests, hobbies, and skills can become paid employment. Often there’s an ‘a-ha’ moment where people start to see the possibilities. We can then brainstorm the potential jobs and start creating action plans. It’s a simple process, but highly effective to help candidates think and see themselves differently. I’d love to see more employment coaches accessing training like this and having the time and support to deliver these sorts of interventions. Because the mindset is a difficult challenge to overcome, but when someone starts to feel excited about the opportunities, the path is much more exciting! Ps. Send me a DM if you’d like to learn more about my training programs that use these kinds of activities to build confidence.

In the trenches - a reminder that this is why working in Employment services is a privilege …. The next 17 days will see the opportunity for the Disability Employment sector to truly shape a new way of servicing and supporting people with a disability in the pursuit of identifying capabilities, linking pathways and supporting opportunities so that we can see a better parity and representation of those with a disability in Australia have meaningful careers at all levels. #RealisingPotential Many of my sector colleagues are busily working on disseminating data, relishing in case studies ( how amazing is it reading impactful stories!) and exploring innovative service models through writing to the elusive character counts. Its no easy task. It’s long days, late nights but much like this time 12 months ago (AASS) & 3 years ago (WFA) - it is all worth it when employers and participants will be afforded the best service options as the New Specialist Disability Employment Services will commence next year. Being an IEP Fellow, I can see and feel first hand the pressured time for those involved in bid submissions, those on the frontline still delivering important services and those supporting either groups. I take from the RFT and the many sector discussions the confidence that the industry isn’t broken, the services delivered impact and change lives and the new model will simply allow the great outcomes to continue with a level of simplification, additional innovation, approach and broader support with the likes of the Centre of Excellence. So whilst it feels like the trenches are deep right now, remember that the most surreal projects are underpinned by the best laid foundations.

🎉 As we celebrate this final day of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, lets highlight important things needed for employability, particularly for individuals with disabilities. 🧩 We believe that employability is about more than just securing a job; it also includes the ability to thrive in the workplace. 👉🏼 Success hinges on: technical expertise paired with a person’s ability to engage effectively with others, and navigate the job market. 🤓 Read our article to learn more about unlocking these skills https://lnkd.in/gWvDruzH #DisabilitySupport #Disability #UnifiedWork #SoftSkills

“I want to contribute to society. I want a job.” It’s an aspiration that for a disabled person comes with an uphill challenge. This article explains why the odds, if not ‘the system’ is stacked against disabled people. It’s a long and frustrating read, but it does highlight why we as employers need to do more. From education to finding accommodation and the hurdles faced in entering the workplace, disabled people often have a bitter experience and that’s certainly the case here with Elliot’s story. And Elliot is not alone in his struggle to find employment. Disabled people are almost twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people. As well as being unfair, it's a huge waste of talent. At Cordell Health we are here to support those with disabilities in work, moving the focus from disability to ability. It’s about what people can do and the adjustments needed to support them where they struggle. We think of this as “levelling the playing field”. As his family explain, it “shouldn’t be as much effort” just to have the future he wants.” When you’ve read this, you’ll agree. #AbilityNotDisability #AccessibleWorkplace #WorkplaceHealth https://lnkd.in/eUXmANxT

In a world of competition, there is a place for collaboration. Today kicked off the the preliminary sessions of the 2024 Disability Employment Australia conference - aptly themed as “ready for reform”. Sitting in the CFO round table today { that was highly engaging!} and connecting with new, current and previous sector colleagues solidified the belief that as a sector we are as strong as the weakest link, therefore the sharing of insights, ideas, pain points and horizon thinking across today will only strengthen the collective goals we have. Disability Employment Services has the fundamental outcome of realising an individuals potential and best self in the context of employment. A myriad of other services - interconnected or complimentary also aim to bring other elements of one’s best self - the key is how can we harness the employment expertise but also navigate and link other expertise so that someone has the chance for a fulfilled best self in multiple contexts. What a privilege we have! The word “reform” by nature does bring a negative connotation. It can derive the thinking of the change needed when something isn’t working. Therefore I’m embracing the conference as a “ready to ignite”, ignite the passion, ignite the creative thinking, ignite the innovation but never lose the ignition of purpose in what we do. Proud to be representing IntoWork Australia as the future of DES provides significant opportunities in all areas of employment and training offered within the Group. Bring on day 2 & 3 and the continued references to pop music and fashion by the ever-entertaining Wayne Herbert MAICD FIEP 🙌🏻 #DisabilityEmployment #IntoWork #Interact #HelpEnterprises #Careers #EmploymentProgression #Innovate #DES #DSS #DESReforms #PeakBody #QualityFramework #CoDesign #PersonCentred

Shaping Disability Employment Excellence in Australia: The Partnership between IEP and Disability Employment Australia In a landmark collaboration designed to drive professional standards forward in Australia, the Institute for Employability Professionals (IEP) has joined forces with Disability Employment Australia (DEA). This partnership marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of excellence and inclusion within the employability sector, with a shared vision to unlock the full potential of people with disabilities in the workforce. This approach to collaboration is already in evidence, with IEP Global CEO Scott Parkin FIEP presenting the new IEP Quality Improvement Framework (QIF) at the DEA Leadership Forum in Sydney on March 27. This was a timely contribution given the introduction of a new Quality Framework within the Disability Employment Service (DES) at the start of the year... https://lnkd.in/eJskdG3U @IEPInfo @IEPInfoAustralia #IEPNews #IEPAustralia @MrEmployability @PeterBaconFIEP @Disabilityemplt #IEPQIF #Employability
