Head over to the DAO blog in the coming weeks to find a series of posts by Access All Areas celebrating the Transforming Leadership National programme. These blogs will feature learning disabled and autistic leaders from arts companies around the UK, sharing what leadership and this process means to them. Following those stories in March 2025, AAA and partners will share practical solutions for increasing learning disabled and autistic creative employment at an event (more details to be revealed soon). First up in the series is a post by Paul Christian, Deputy Chairperson of Access All Areas. Paul discusses his ideas about training others, seeing his experience reflected, and imagining the perfect board meeting. Three participants are sitting in a circle. Helen, the workshop leader, is standing next to the circle. She is holding a water bottle and laughing as a participant talks to her. On the design, text reads: "Transforming Leadership National Blog” along with Disability Arts Online and AAA Logos. There is also the illustration that represents the Transforming Leadership programme, two hands joined together seemingly holding various floating icons.

It’s not always fun and games … 💭 It’s actually a lots better when you have experience and knowledge to draw from. Knowing when you need to pull back and push forward. I am thankful for today and have the space to discuss a taboo theme of … BURNOUT ☄️ Holding spaces with Young Men and sharing it’s not weak to ask for support or just check-in. These is some much assumption that the younger generations already have the answers and that’s just not right. I do wonder if here on LinkedIn we celebrate all the awareness training and leadership workshops, that’s the underrepresented we are meant to be supporting are will not been given a seat or voice. Fact: it’s not happening and people are still getting left behind. #dei #wellbeing #mentalhealth #workshop #holdingspace #youngmen #millennials #genz #genx

People sometimes view DEI as alienating, even when it is meant to be empowering. Because of this, DEI leaders and programs need to emphasize strategic communication that bridges divides without sacrificing core values! This proves just how adaptable DEI efforts must be. Lasting social progress can be greatly boosted by utilizing language that fosters empathy and understanding. Adaptability within DEI is something we've mastered at Turning Point Leadership Group, and we love to help others do the same! #TurningPointLeadershipGroup #TPLG #DEI #Leadership

This article captured me with the phrase "EDI isn't the problem. Inequality is the problem" and that potentially some of the backlash we have been seeing is the response to broader issues of inequality. The article points to perhaps the next stages of work that are needed with perhaps not the answers at this stage but rather the questions on how to progress. The two that stand out for me and align with inclusive leadership; championed by top management levels, with EDI integrated into the business rather than additive. #EDI #inclusion #leadership #training #development https://buff.ly/466LpcY

Whether DEI is the acronym or other words are substituted, the work remains the same. For organizations navigating backlash, consider these questions before swapping names. 1. Is DEI a part of your culture? 2. Are your customers, employees and community members aligned with the term DEI? 3. Do you operate outside of higher education or state governments that are challenging the use of the term DEI? 4. Have you defined your DEI strategy? 5. Is your leadership team fully supportive of DEI? #DEI #leadership #allyship
