Diamond Mining Production in South Africa Hits a 10-Year Low A recent analysis by The Outlier has shed light on a notable shift in South Africa's diamond output. 📉 Key Insights: South Africa's diamond production has decreased from an average of 8.5 million carats annually to 6.1 million carats by 2023. This decline is primarily due to De Beers’ Venetia diamond mine reaching the end of its open-pit operations in December 2022. The Venetia mine, located near Musina in Limpopo, was responsible for 40% of the country's diamond production. 💡 Looking Ahead: De Beers is currently developing an underground mine at Venetia, aiming to extend its operational life until the 2040s. This new phase is projected to yield 88 million carats, ensuring a continued supply of high-quality diamonds. Despite the dip, South Africa remains a top 10 diamond-producing country, contributing 5% to the global diamond supply. 🌍 Global Context: The Russian Federation leads with 37.3 million carats, followed by Botswana at 25 million carats, according to 2023 data from the Kimberley Process. On 27th August, 2024, Burkina Faso nationalised two gold mines, Boungou and Wahgnion. This follows a legal battle between London-listed Endeavour Mining and the African-based company, Lilium Mining. The former had initially attempted to sell the mines to the latter for $300 million. However, Lilium failed to pay the full sum - falling some $100 million short. The two companies then reached a settlement with Ouagadougou, which paid for $80 million. In 2022, upon President Ibrahim Traoré’s coming to power, Burkina Faso nationalised the Perkoa gold mine from the Canadian Trevali Mining Corporation after eight Burkinabé miners died while trapped underground. That year, the government also withdrew mining licences for Guiro, Yéou and Kalsaka mines, liquidating Trevali’s subsidiary Nantou Mining company. The West African country has been making major moves towards greater sovereignty over its natural resources, as well as working to develop basic industry to refine resources in the country. In November 2023, construction began of a gold refinery which, it’s hoped, will begin producing gold bars as early as October 2024. The project aims to create 100 direct jobs and 5,000 more indirectly. Malian company, Marena Gold is assisting Burkina in this development. Ouagadougou has also made moves in recent years to nationalise its sugar sector as well as The Commercial Bank of Burkina Faso (BCB). Similar moves towards greater control over resources and key sectors of the economy can be seen across the Alliances of Sahel States (AES), of which Burkina Faso is a part. AES member Niger recently revoked French mining company Orano’s licence to operate in the country. This came after Niger nationalised its water sector from French company Veolia. Anglo Asian Mining PLC (AIM:AAZ, OTC:AGXKF) hailed the current quarter just ended as a turning point for the miner with permission to restart operations and raise its tailings dam wall at the Gedabek mine in Azerbaijan. A first lift in the wall by 2.5 metres will be completed in November 2024 while production restarted from its agitation leaching plant last month. Sinomine [SHE: 002738] closed 6.8 percent up at CNY40.79 (USD5.67) in Shenzhen today. Sinomine’s unit African Minerals will buy a 65 percent stake in Junction Mining from Momentum Ventures and Chifupu Resources, the Beijing-based parent company announced today. Junction’s main asset is the Kitumba copper project in Zambia, which has 27.9 million tons of proven copper mineral resources, according to an estimate from a report released in 2015 by third-party independent organization MSA Group.
