Brandenburg Gate: A Symbol of Unity and History Berlin's Brandenburg Gate is more than just a stunning landmark; it's a powerful symbol of German history. Architectural Gem: Built in the late 18th century, this neoclassical masterpiece is inspired by the Athenian Acropolis gate. Its grand columns and iconic quadriga statue (a chariot drawn by four horses) make it a recognizable landmark. A Witness to Change: The Gate has witnessed centuries of German history. It served as a city gate, a triumphal arch, and even a dividing line during the Cold War. Today, it stands as a symbol of German reunification. A Beacon of Unity: After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate became a powerful symbol of German unity. Its image is a reminder of overcoming division and celebrating peace. A Tourist Magnet: Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a major tourist attraction. Visitors flock to admire its architecture, learn about its history, and experience its powerful symbolism.

Architecture is related to wars, victories, people, culture and so many things architecture is related to Life.
The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. It is situated at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle (initially Place de l'Étoile), at the beginning of the Champs-Élysées. The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Under its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War. 📸: Henry Do #architecture #design #paris #monument

Sadly, this week, a fire has ravaged one of Copenhagen's most iconic historic buildings. This tragic event is the latest in a series of recent fires in emblematic historic buildings (e.g., the Notre-Dame and Shuri Castle fires in 2019, the fire at the National Museum of Brazil in 2018, etc.) that have resulted in huge losses of cultural heritage. Therefore, it is just another reminder of how vulnerable historic buildings are to fire. Although there have been significant advances in research, the fire safety of historic buildings is still alarming, with important research gaps to be addressed. The following study, co-written with Ignacio Paya-Zaforteza and Antonio Hospitaler, provides further discussion on this topic: https://lnkd.in/dUstWpE8 Hopefully, lessons will be learned from this sad event and measures will be taken to prevent further loss of heritage due to fire in the future. #fire #heritage #historicbuilding

Reading the DNA of Buildings 🏛 Just as humans have DNA, buildings possess their essence. My conservation principles module during my master's equipped me with the tools to understand and preserve this heritage. Delving into Canterbury's rich history, through sketches and analysis, I've unearthed the essence of its listed buildings, each telling a unique story. When making decisions on architectural heritage, ask yourself: Would I want someone to erase my essence? Let's ensure our cities retain their dignity and character for generations to come.
