July 2024 Disrupt HR in Tulsa, OK It did not start off well. The event was held in a bar that was overly loud due to the number of people (a mixed bag) and the DJ cranking tunes at over 106dB, a level that causes damage in fifteen minutes. I spoke with one of the organizers, but she blew me off, promising she would do something and instead she walked away–that’s helpful. I spoke with the DJ and he said he was cranking it too loud to try to get the noise to the other end of the bar. He was unsuccessful and had an audience of just me and the sign-in table, where none of us could hear another. The cost was high–$50–for the meeting and some bar food and two drinks (beer, wine, or soda). And there were six or eight sponsors, so cha ching! This was my first and last Disrupt HR event. There were twelve speakers with varying success. Most of the speakers appear to be part of the HR bureaucracy that they claim to want to disrupt. Most of the advice was the basic stuff we have known for decades and ought to be doing daily. Some might have found some nuggets, but it was tough hunting, for sure. Three speakers gave presentations that were indecipherable–I have no idea what they were trying to say; I doubt they did either. The Disrupt HR format of five minutes, with slides auto-advancing every 15 seconds was interesting as was the trouble it provided a number of speakers. The HR industry is stale and ripe for innovation and disruption for sure, but this was not the event to do it, and I doubt these are the folks who will advance the industry. It is interesting too that the organizers do not keep the organization’s vanity media sites up to date and information on the event was scarce. That should have been a clue. So, the door is wide open to someone to step up to the plate and improve HR. We know it is not SHRM and now we can add DisruptHR to the list also. Anyone want to join me and make the earth shake, rattle, and roll and improve our industry? It’s past time to be stuck in the tar pits of old HR.

💣 What I’ve learned after 10+ years of disrupting HR... 💣 On December 13th, 2023, we celebrated 10 years of DisruptHR LLC with our 8th DisruptHR Cincinnati event, a decade after the first! To close out the event, I gave a DisruptHR Talk (5 minutes, with 20 slides that are set to auto-advance every 15 seconds) to share what I've learned during those 10 years about disrupting HR. It was fun, and the energy in the room was high after hearing 11 Talks from our fantastic speakers (Benjamin McCall, MBA Brad Wise George Sample, MBA, SHRM-SCP Johanna Krogh John Bernatovicz KeiSha L. Linda Wunderley Lawren Watson Megan Leasher Meghan Hensley SHRM-SCP and Melanie (MB) Booher (Rains), MHR, PHR, CFC Culture Coach) so I may have been a bit hyped. 🤩 But I had things to say! Here's a few of the lessons that I've learned: 💥 Lesson 1 — Impactful networking happens when you choose to meet people that you don't already know. 🎁 Bonus Tip: You can't call it an HR event in Cincinnati if Steve Browne, SHRM-SCP isn't there. 💥 Lesson 2 — Don't overthink it. Just say "Yes!" 💥 Lesson 3 — Resist the urge to compete. There's always room for more. 💥 Lesson 4 — Less rules = More better. (Things that low details Founders say.) 💥 Lesson 5 — A labor of love costs a lot more than it makes in terms of 💰, but it can still be rewarding. (Most of the time.) Since it was December, and in the spirit of Festivus, I also shared a few of my grievances... 🤬 👀 Want to hear them (and see how I handle a slide malfunction 🤣)? Watch the full 5-minute video below! It's been an incredible 10+ year journey thus far - wild, strange, and immensely rewarding. And with 154 licensed cities in 35 countries (and growing!), this ride isn't stopping anytime soon. 🙌🏼 I'll always be grateful to my partner in crimes - Chris Ostoich - for listening to my simple idea, and making it a reality, and also to Mary Faulkner for being the first person to take DisruptHR beyond Cincinnati to host DisruptHR Denver, which sparked a global movement. 🙏 And a final thank you to everyone who's been a part of DisruptHR thus far - hosts, sponsors, attendees, and speakers! Because of you, we're able to continue to provide a platform for people around the world to share their ideas about work and the workplace. Here's to more lessons — and more grievances — in the future while continuing to disrupt the future of work!

Great to have been part of our recent HR meetup and sharing my thoughts on stakeholder management. Really enjoyed connecting with other professionals and discussing the importance of building strong, authentic relationships in the HR space. My key takeaways: ✔️ All stakeholders are important, regardless of their position or level of influence. ✔️ Building relationships with allies can be crucial for reaching stakeholders who are difficult to connect with directly. ✔️ Effective stakeholder management requires understanding the needs of each individual and tailoring your approach accordingly. #HR #stakeholdermanagement #networking #humanresources
🌻 A change from our usual Pizza & Beers, our September HR Meetup celebrated Jozi Spring outdoors with fresh brewed coffee & breakfast, while our panel speakers Ayanda Maseko; Chrisna Park and Shaun Raaff discussed the importance of developing healthy, authentic relationships with your professional stakeholders - and what this looks like for leaders in the HR space! In HR, it's common to feel like a "middle-man" - pulled every which way by stakeholders with conflicting priorities, or perhaps disregarded as a strategic decision-maker in people-related matters. Effective Stakeholder Management is one way to combat these challenges, by building a foundation of trust, mutual respect and psychological safety within your networks. Thank you to all who joined this brilliant discussion! 📢 If you'd like to join our next HR Meetup in November - please contact Chrisna Park on Chrisna@humanitysa.co.za to be added to our mailing list #HR #HumanResources #HRMeetups #HumanCapital #Networking Shaun Raaff Annie (Andrea) Osterloh Laura Pycraft Craig Page-Lee

What's more fun than a speed dating event? A speed dating event featuring HR leaders and professionals! (Tbh, we're not entirely sure that's a fair statement to make but we're trying to convince you to come to our event so just roll with it) Next week on Wednesday 6th March (new date), we have our first Speed Dating event for the year. It's free and it's for anyone who is in HR, HR-adjacent, in people-leadership or any sort of job where you are facing people-related challenges and questions. So what does a Speed Dating event for HR folks look like? 👍 You come to the event early and meet some people, eat our snacks and have some drinks 👍 We'll then guide you to think of something you're curious about, struggling with, need some more perspectives on 👍 You'll then meet with each of the other attendees for a few minutes at a time, share the situation you've got and get their input (usually in the form of questions to help you find your own solution) 👍 You'll then switch round and give the other people some things to think about 👍 We'll keep doing that for as long as it makes sense and we have time 👍 We'll then wrap up with some insights and then some more networking if you want It's a really great way to practice asking questions, to share insights, to get some perspectives that you may never have thought of. Because HR can be lonely and peer input is gold. So sign up today and we'll see you in a couple of weeks! https://lnkd.in/gTddsaum?
