"History is the teacher of life." — Cicero Collio, one of Europe's most captivating wine regions, has a glorious yet often forgotten history. In 1787, under Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the first-ever "Cru" classification of wines was established—long before Bordeaux's 1855 classification. This system covered the County of Gorizia and Gradisca, an exceptional terroir straddling Italy and Slovenia, and was based solely on the "quality" of the wines produced, highlighting the importance of the land and grape quality. The historic vineyards spanned from the Italian #Collio to the Slovenian #Brda, including the Colli Orientali, the Isonzo Valley, Carso, and Vipava. Unfortunately, the fate of this "cru" system suffered due to centuries of wars, administrative changes, and the rise of modern techniques that change wine styles and the rise of industrialization that led to vineyard abandonment. The memory of this classification faded over time, along with the recognition of Collio's historical greatness as a wine-growing region of excellence. Today, rediscovering the "Cru of Maria Theresa" classification is not just about reviving a historical legacy but also seizing a missed opportunity to reinforce the identity of a truly unique territory. Here, wine stands as a symbol of rebirth and a laboratory for peace. The recent rediscovery and the establishment of the "Association of the Knights of the Crus of Empress-Queen Maria Theresa" mark an important step toward reclaiming this heritage, with initiatives such as the "Grand Wines of the County Auction for Peace." Nel 1787, l'Imperatrice-Regina Maria Teresa pubblicò la prima Classificazione dei Cru della Contea di Gorizia, seguendo il sistema Tavolare. Charles-Louis de Noüe, discendente di una delle più prestigiose famiglie del vino di Borgogna (con Domaine Leflaive), grazie a questa scoperta ha fondato l’Associazione dei Cavalieri della Classificazione dei Cru dell’Imperatrice-Regina Maria Teresa. Da tre anni, il Convento francescano di Kostanjevica, insieme all'Associazione dei Cavalieri, organizza un’asta di beneficenza per la pace, chiamata Grandi Vini del Territorio Goriziano per la Pace. Questo evento riunisce produttori di prestigio del territorio, mettendo all'asta alcuni dei migliori vini della regione per sostenere cause benefiche. Siamo orgogliosi che faccia parte dell'associazione anche la storica Fondazione e Cantina Villa Russiz, simbolo dell’eccellenza vinicola e dell'impegno sociale, con una produzione legata a progetti di solidarietà. L’asta dei grandi vini della Contea di Gorizia a favore del Monastero di Castagnevizza (Nova Gorica), dove sono sepolti l'ultimo re di Francia, Carlo X, e i suoi discendenti, si svolgerà sabato mattina, 26 ottobre 2024 alle ore 11:00, a cura della prestigiosa casa d'aste internazionale Dorotheum.
