Measles stands as one of the most infectious diseases known to humanity, with a history stretching back to the 9th century when it was first described by the Persian physician Abū Bakr Muhammad Zakariyyā Rāzī, also known as Rhazes. Its spread intensified with the rise of global exploration in the 16th century. A significant breakthrough occurred in 1757 when Scottish doctor Francis Home demonstrated that measles was caused by an infectious agent, successfully transmitting the disease using the blood of infected patients. This discovery paved the way for understanding and combating the disease more effectively. Historically, regions with no prior exposure to the measles virus suffered devastatingly upon first contact. Notable outbreaks decimated populations in isolated communities, such as the Faroe Islands in 1846, Hawai`i in 1848, Fiji in 1875, and Rotuma in 1911, highlighting the critical need for widespread immunization. As healthcare providers, we know the importance of considering coinfections when treating patients. Did you know that many children with COVID-19 also have RSV, influenza, and other viral syndromes? It's no wonder they are so sick, and unfortunately, this has led to unnecessary deaths around the world. One virus is bad enough, but when you add three together, severe disease is much more likely. This underscores the importance of immunizing children against all respiratory diseases possible. Let's work together to keep our children healthy and safe. #COVID19 #RSV #Influenza #ChildHealth #Immunization Thanks to Gary Longsine for sharing this article.
