The best ways to learn in corporate settings: Hands-on, problem-centered, and collaborative As a leader, I've seen firsthand how professionals grow when their learning strategies are grounded in practical experience. At Splended, we advocate for three key approaches: 1. Experiential learning: Adults learn best by doing, not just observing. Real-world application transforms knowledge into actionable skills. 2. Problem-centered learning: Professionals want to solve real problems, not engage in abstract theory. Learning is most effective when it addresses current challenges. 3. Collaborative learning: Team-based learning promotes idea-sharing and engagement. Peer interaction allows us to expand our thinking and apply new concepts. These strategies are the backbone of effective corporate development—helping teams build confidence, performance, and growth. Let’s focus on what works! #leadership #learninganddevelopment #corporate

I’m so excited to facilitate Giant Leap’s Executive Peer Group. If I can provide the space in which leaders and their peers experience transformation, it's incredibly fulfilling. Facilitating one of my chief of staff mastermind cohorts, I led a brainstorming session. You know, brainstorming, where you do a bunch of divergent thinking and get ideas on the wall. No judgment applied (yet). I noticed the group quickly defaulted to finding the holes in ideas, problem-solving, and leaping ahead to planning. So, I called a "time out" and asked, "Do you see how automatically you jump into fixing and action? We have a separate agenda item for that after the brainstorm. But, perhaps especially at the executive level, where our work has much broader impact than when we were subject matter experts or functional specialists, our role is to elicit ideas from others and listen before applying judgment. How does this focus on ‘fixing’ serve or limit your team?" The resulting discussion revealed that we had all reached positions working in and with the C-suite due to our ability to “find holes,” solve problems, and turn ideas into action. Usually by creating a plan. Promotions and bonuses had rewarded this mindset and behavior for years. But now, our role required more of us—we needed to *empower others* to fix, plan, and act. As our responsibilities grew, we no longer had all the insights ourselves, and technical skills gave way to the need for self-management, team leadership, and team transformation. I challenged the group, "How can your teams operate at a higher level if you're doing the work for them?" This sparked an "aha" moment for most of the group. Participants later shared how this moment not only changed how they went about their day-to-day work but transformed their leadership team meetings. It had a multiplicative effect, as they pulled their own teams out of the weeds and tackled more of the right problems, earlier. To create a winning culture, start by gaining your employees' trust and buy-in. This involves being authentic, true to your word, willing to listen, and eager to understand their needs. Authentic Leadership requires a daily commitment to consistency, not just occasional efforts. In my experience, the key to earning trust and buy-in is being fully invested in your employees' careers and respecting their lives outside of work. Support their career goals by promoting a culture of learning, and show that you value them by getting to know them as individuals. As a leader, commit to continuous self-improvement and encourage the same for your team. Going out into the world to contribute your unique skills and perspectives is rewarding of course, but then coming back into a room of people who all geek out on the same stuffs as you is just dang good. 😌 I participated in a great training around Manager Development and Scaling Manager Training in Organizations put on by LifeLabs Learning today. (What's the geek out point for me? Leadership and management development for positive social impact was at the crux of my master’s program at Washington University in St. Louis just two brief years ago! I am dedicated to helping leaders become more awesome in their roles and helpful to their communities.) LifeLab Learning’s macro ideas today on how to make feedback more “receivable” were a great reinforcement. For instance: Ever told someone that something they did or said is “good, bad, realistic, not realistic, risky, ideal” etc.? Terms such as these have a vagueness that are open to interpretation, and “deblurring” them (aka unpacking them with factual specifics) can make make your feedback more receivable. Especially with colleagues with less institutional influence/power than you. Along with the macro strategies in these sessions, I always gain subtle insights. This time I cued into the tactics demonstrated to increase participant investment and engagement in virtual presentations. All were low-lift for facilitators and participants alike, and gave the presenters constant feedback on their attunement with their audience. So valuable! Shout out to the continued great work of LifeLabs. 🙌 #leadershipdevelopment #leadership #management #diversityandinclusion #DEI #peopleoperations #talentdevelopment #communications #engagement #preachtothechoir #socialimpact
