Exciting news for the skilled trades industry! The Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario, led by Associate Minister of Women's Social and Economic Opportunity, Hon. Charmaine Williams, is investing $1.18 million at the Burlington Centre for Skills Development to support initiatives that will empower 60 women to enter the trades. This funding is a significant step toward reducing barriers and increasing gender diversity in our construction industry. Through the training program, women who have experienced or are at risk of intimate partner violence can also access wraparound supports, including referrals to mental health and well-being services, counselling, housing, and legal support. This initiative not only addresses the skilled labour shortage but also fosters a more inclusive workforce by providing critical resources for women facing unique challenges. Positive Change Needed in Wake of New Dawn. Following the recent general election, there's a call for real action from newly elected politicians. The focus is on how they'll bring about the promised change, especially in the challenging environment of power-sharing at Stormont. History shows that true transformation comes from grassroots efforts rather than top-down directives. The WiB Group exemplifies this. Once a small network of like-minded women, it is now a fully-fledged group of social enterprises united in our pursuit of a truly inclusive economy for Northern Ireland. Together with Women in Business NI, Diversity Mark, Timely Careers and The Centre of Learning, The WiB Group is living proof of manifesting change - change that really takes root and makes a difference. The importance of equitable funding allocation cannot be overstated. After sharing the open letter this weekend, I decided to provide some nuanced content to help people understand the disparities and how they impact the target communities. Many organisations heavily rely on funding as a lifeline, yet the reality often shows a significant gap in reaching the communities in dire need. To bridge this gap effectively, here are some actionable suggestions for funders: 1. Promote Equitable Collaboration: Ensure that collaborations between large organisations and grassroots groups are funded fairly. Smaller organisations frequently bear the weight without adequate resources, leading to an unsustainable and unjust situation. 2. Embrace Diversity in Decision-Making: Funding decisions must reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. Representation plays a pivotal role—incorporating individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds is essential for equitable resource distribution. 3. Transparent Impact Tracking: Utilising disaggregated data is vital. Funders should support the delivery of comprehensive reports detailing their funding beneficiaries to pinpoint any disparities and guarantee inclusivity across all groups. 4. Acknowledge Grassroots Expertise: While grassroots organisations often drive significant impact, they may lack larger counterparts' polished applications or visibility. Funders must delve deeper into recognising the genuine value these organisations bring to the table. These initial steps aim to tackle systemic disparities in funding allocation. Strengthening Workforce Equity for a Thriving Piedmont Triad: The Piedmont Triad region, a dynamic hub of innovation and industry in North Carolina, faces significant challenges as it works to strengthen its workforce and create opportunities for all residents. In a comprehensive assessment titled the "Strengthening Equity & Community Growth Through Engagement & Assessment" project, the Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) and the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) have come together with community stakeholders to better understand the barriers to equitable employment and economic mobility. This initiative is part of the broader SITE Next-Gen Cluster, which focuses on invigorating advanced manufacturing in the region. The pandemic revealed and exacerbated disparities, particularly among low-income, minority, and vulnerable communities, affecting their ability to recover economically. Through in-depth research—including interviews, focus groups, and surveys—the PTRC project has identified key issues that must be addressed to ensure a fair and inclusive labor market. Key Research Findings Post-Pandemic Workforce Challenges: The pandemic hit the Piedmont Triad’s workforce hard, particularly in sectors like hospitality and tourism, where unemployment and job insecurity soared. Low-income workers, women, and minority groups have borne the brunt of the pandemic's impact. Many people are now more reluctant to return to jobs that expose them to health risks or lack flexibility, such as those in industries requiring face-to-face interaction. Wealth and Wage Disparities: North Carolina’s racial wealth gap remains a critical issue. White families' median wealth is significantly higher than that of Black families. Wage disparities and unequal access to higher-paying jobs contribute to this divide. The COVID-19 pandemic deepened these inequalities, with minority workers often being the hardest hit by economic hardships and inflation. Barriers for Vulnerable Workers: In a region as diverse as the Piedmont Triad, workers from marginalized groups, such as ethnic minorities, women, justice-involved individuals, and those with disabilities, continue to face barriers in the workforce. Interviews and focus groups revealed issues like discrimination, lack of access to childcare, transportation difficulties, and wage disparities. Additionally, workers with criminal records face ongoing stigma and a lack of re-entry support. ‘The call for greater diversity in leadership has grown louder, yet women remain underrepresented in political offices, particularly at the local government level. Despite making up more than half the U.S. population, women account for only 31% of state legislative seats, less than 30% of mayoral positions and hold just 26% of elected county offices nationwide, according to the Center for American Women and Politics.’ Read the full article iKNOW Politics.
