Moving to Australia as a Family Relocating your family to Australia can be stressful. Not only are you moving to a new house, but you are also relocating to a new continent, potentially thousands of kilometres away. Australia is on the other side of the world. While modern amenities like the Internet and mobile phones make it possible to stay in touch with friends and family, you may be moving far away from your ancestral home. Fortunately, moving to Australia doesn’t have to be a frightening experience for your family. Australia offers a fantastic life for families of all sizes. If you want to relocate to the Land Down Under, then there are plenty of things to consider before starting the emigration process. https://lnkd.in/eJWYBevz

🌴 The Big Pivot - Reflections from a Canadian transplant in Miami🌴 It's hard to believe it's been a year since my family and I made the big move from Canada to Miami! To celebrate our “MIAnniversary,” I’m sharing a few lessons from this exciting (and sometimes challenging) journey: 🌴 The kids are stronger than you think – My kids adapted faster then I could’ve ever imagined with grace (and humour), proving their resilience was beyond our greatest expectations. 🌴 Patience is key – Set fair expectations of yourself: Moving across countries takes time, especially when you have to rebuild key foundations from scratch. 🌴 Community is everything – Developing a local support system is essential. Start by developing meaningful relationships with your schools and neighbours. 🌴 Adapt a curiosity mindset – Lean into the adventure! Embrace local culture, food, and climate by diving into the unknown. (Important lesson learned through some awkward misses: In Miami when you greet people, you do so with a kiss on the left cheek!) 🌴 Honey, the critters are... different here – Let's just say, I’m still adjusting to Miami’s wildlife. 🐊🦎 🌴 Change brings growth – It’s often in life’s most uncomfortable moments that the greatest learning opportunities can present themselves. There IS light at the end of the tunnel. 🌴 Home is where my family is – ‘Home’ has shifted its definition for me now. It’s no longer a stationary place or location. Wherever we are, as long as we’re together, my fab four are all I need. A HUGE thank you to the fabulous Cristy Diaz, founder of @Mamasinmiami for hosting me on Instagram Live this morning where I had a lot of fun elaborating on some of my ‘lessons learned’. To watch our conversation, click below (note, in the first few mins we experienced some serious technical difficulties but it was worth the wait once we finally got things rolling!) Thank you, Miami, for a great first year. Here’s to growth, new experiences, and connections! 🏡 🌟 If you, or someone you know is relocating to Miami and would benefit from some transition support, please feel free to message me directly 🌟 https://lnkd.in/gpTnzHFb
✨ Mamas In Miami ✨ on Instagram: "The internet may not have wanted to cooperate this morning but that didn’t stop us from an exciting IG Live with the incredible @chrysaliscomiami25 , who recently made the big move from Canada to Miami! 🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸 Julie shares her journey of relocating, adjusting to life in the U.S., and how she's balancing being a mom of two and her career as a transition Coach.

May 15 is #InternationaDayofFamilies, a time to recognize the essential roles that family plays not only in our lives but also in the wellbeing and functioning of society. With 2024 being the 30th anniversary of the United Nations International Year of the Family, it is an important time to understand who families in Canada are today and what has changed for family life over the last three decades. That’s one of the reasons the Vanier Institute has released a publication exploring these trends. Family Structure is the first release from #FamiliesCount2024, a four-part series that highlights what families in Canada look like today and how they have changed since the inaugural International Year of the Family in 1994. Future releases will also explore family work, family identity, and family wellbeing. https://lnkd.in/eVpEzhhA

It's officially and it's available now for Aussie Third Culture Kids. Do you know any Aussies serving overseas with their families ? There are about one million Australian citizens living outside Australia, including families with children. Some are sent abroad for work - with DFAT, the ADF, NGOs, multinational companies, or missionary organisations. Others take jobs in their fields outside Australia, and still others move to be near family in other parts of the world. Australian kids growing up outside Australia are 'Third Culture Kids'(TCKs). They build childhood memories and emotional connections in other places and communities. Their concept of what it means to be 'Australian' will be impacted by these experiences, and their re-entry to Australia is often unexpectedly rocky. Thongs or Flip-Flops? provides Australian TCKs and Australian families living overseas with everything they need to know in order to thrive long term, no matter what paths they take in life. I guess for some people it's like the galaxy guide for Aussie TCK

After recently making the big move back to Australia with my British husband and our three kids, we've found ourselves at the coal face of homesickness. It’s a familiar feeling, but also different this time around. When I moved to London solo as a 21-year-old fresh out of university, homesickness was raw and immediate, the initial loneliness and longing for the comfort of friends, places, and things I knew by heart. Even now as an Aussie returning home after 18 years abroad, those pangs are still here, though they’re tinged with memories of the life we built in the UK. Despite being back in semi-familiar surroundings, I've realized that the pull of “home” is more complicated than just geography and the passport you hold —it's about belonging, and that hasn’t changed since I first left. Homesickness used to be a matter of physical distance and longing for a specific place. But in today’s world, it’s about more than miles; it’s about the feeling of rootedness and belonging. Rebuilding that feeling after a move takes time and intention, but there are ways to combat the pangs of homesickness in meaningful, practical ways. First, creating new routines can help ground us in unfamiliar surroundings. Whether it’s a weekly family outing, discovering a new café, or joining a local group, routines give us something familiar to look forward to, making a new place feel a bit more like home. Connecting with new people and communities can also help fill the void. It doesn’t replace the friends or family left behind, but forming new connections helps establish a support network in a new location. Another way to ease homesickness is to embrace both the old and the new. It’s okay to hold onto favorite traditions and habits from our former home while weaving in new experiences. This balance can bring comfort, helping us feel connected to our past while being open to the future. Ultimately, homesickness reminds us all of the deep connections we’ve built over time—and with a few intentional steps, we can begin to create that same feeling of belonging in a new place. And views like this when you are working from home certainly ease the pain too! #BackToOz #AustralianLife #AussieLife #ReturningToAustralia #AussieExpat #LifeInAustralia

🌍 Staying Connected Across Oceans: Tips for Expats and Young Families 🌍 For many expats, especially those with young families, maintaining close ties with loved ones back home can be incredibly challenging. Balancing the demands of an intense job, navigating an unfamiliar culture, and possibly even learning a new language—all while raising young children—can make it hard to keep up with family relationships across the ocean. Here are some tips that can help bridge the distance: Schedule Regular Video Calls 📱: Whether it’s a weekly chat or spontaneous video drop-ins, making time for virtual face-to-face connections can help maintain strong bonds. Share Everyday Moments 📸: Don’t wait for big milestones. Sending pictures or short videos of daily life—whether it’s a new park you discovered or your child’s latest artwork—can make distant relatives feel involved in your family’s life. Create Family Rituals 📅: Establish a shared activity, like reading the same bedtime story over video calls or celebrating holidays together virtually. Even a simple monthly family quiz night can build deeper connections. Utilize Shared Digital Spaces 🌐: Set up a shared family photo album, message group, or even a private blog to keep everyone updated and involved. Plan Visits and Countdown Together ✈️: Even if it’s far off, counting down to the next family visit can be exciting for everyone, especially young kids who can have something concrete to look forward to. While living abroad offers incredible experiences, it’s the connections with family back home that often keep us grounded. #ExpatLife #FamilyConnections #GlobalLiving #YoungFamilies ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for a crash course on the financial impact of living abroad as an American?
