𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 During a recent Emerging Leaders meeting organized by The Circuit, someone raised the question of how to measure user experience. Asking any AI this question will bring up multiple ideas from surveys, observations, task completion time, and more. Reflecting on my past experience building Business Intelligence (BI) systems, we tracked the growth of the user base and frequency of use, which provided clear, quantitative insights into how our systems were being adopted. At one point, we were able to test two systems that served the same purpose but offered different user experiences. The results were clear: the simpler tool saw higher usage and engagement. The more a system resembled a spreadsheet, the more it was used. This reinforced a key principle: simplicity wins. A straightforward, intuitive interface not only enhances usability but also drives user adoption and satisfaction. On Friday, we have the ilionx Data and AI Days, where up to 150 colleagues come together to share knowledge. I'm honored to be giving not one but two sessions at the event. One of my sessions is a duo session with Samantha van Oostveen on the importance of having a UX designer on your dashboarding team. Why should you have a UX designer? What are the benefits? Since this is my first duo session and because it's always good to get some feedback, I asked my colleague Peter Ledeboer, an excellent trainer, to join our dry-run. What was planned to be just a one-hour dry-run turned into an amazing almost three-hour masterclass about presenting. Here are my key takeaways: ✔ Talk with the audience instead of just presenting. ✔ Only talk about topics you are enthusiastic about; then enthusiasm comes naturally. ✔ Less is more: cut unnecessary slides. ✔ Practice, practice, practice. ✔ Start with your key message: what do you want the audience to take away? This session is internal, but it might be insightful for public events too! #ilionxDataAIDays #powerbi #happyendusers #dashboarddesign #UX Inergy

I recently discovered the power of empathy maps in Business Intelligence. It’s not just a tool; it’s a window to the hidden thoughts of end users to better understand user personas. Each quadrant—Says, Thinks, Does, Feels—brings you closer to understanding their thoughts about a particular dashboard or idea, gaining the user’s confidence and building a partnership in the BI life cycle. Empathy maps take us beyond traditional Business Intelligence. They help transform voices into insights and actions into strategy. Your end-users may say one thing. But do their actions align in the final end product? Empathy maps reveal the truth beneath the surface. In business intelligence and UX design, they’re the compass that guides us to what really matters, helping better understand the thoughts, pain points and experiences of customers or end-users. Credits to Dave Gray for creating the empathy map as a collaborative tool to better understand user personas, and Google and Coursera for helping me understand the framework better. I've included the steps below for reference. 7 STEPS to creating an Empathy Map: 1. Define target audience 2. Set a SMART Goal (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based) 3. Gather and consolidate user research data 4. Draw your empathy map. 5. Invite team members for collaboration 6. Gather input and feedback 7. Evaluate the map to draw conclusions #EmpathyMapping #DataVisualization #Insights #BusinessIntelligence

Use behavioral metrics to discover barriers in the user journey. We love Marianela Grande’s framework, which integrates behavioral science into product design to identify and measure barriers in the user journey. The main objectives are to improve existing products, discover potential issues and opportunities, and ensure users can perform tasks effortlessly. Check out her post and template: https://lnkd.in/gFfF5VBW Here is her behavioral mapping process with ways you can incorporate Helio into these workflows: 1️⃣ Define the Goal ↳ Clearly state the desired outcome, the target behavior, and the validation metrics. 2️⃣ Map Decisions and Actions ↳ Track all user actions and decisions, including possible barriers and contexts affecting these choices. Helio provides tools to track and document user actions and decisions. Features like click testing and user flow visualization help identify users' steps, the barriers they encounter, and the contexts that influence their choices. 3️⃣ Find Barriers ↳ Identify psychological and physical barriers impacting user decisions. Gather qualitative and quantitative data from Helio user tests and feedback to identify psychological and physical barriers. Analyze this data to pinpoint cognitive biases, interface issues, and other user decision obstacles. 4️⃣ Add External Context ↳ Consider external factors like time of day and triggers influencing user behavior. Set up tests at different times and conditions. Helio can help you understand how variables like time of day, location, and user environment influence behavior. 5️⃣ Discover Solutions ↳ Propose interventions to address identified barriers, acknowledging that not all will have easy solutions. Propose and test various interventions by setting up A/B tests and experiments. You can iteratively test different solutions, gather user feedback, and effectively refine your approach to address identified barriers. 6️⃣ Measure Barriers vs. Interventions ↳ Validate hypotheses with real data through metrics and A/B testing. Use Helio reporting tools to measure the impact of your interventions. You can test key design metrics, validate hypotheses with survey data, and compare the effectiveness of different solutions through detailed A/B test results. Thanks for inspiring us Marianela! #uxresearch #productdiscovery #marketresearch #productdesign

It is very easy to make your product successful - just combine well your business needs with the users' needs. No, not really. But it could be a good place to start and continue with every product milestone. Plus you cannot have one without the other anyway. When researching user needs it is good to follow certain principles, but it is not an overly complicated or lengthy process - we are talking about days. To name just a few principles - be clear about the 'question' you need answered and then choose the right methods to research it. Simply asking your peers or friends may be a solution at hand, but it will most likely misleads you. The audience should represent your real target users. How did user research work for you? ➡️ Learn more about research methods and real case examples on our web - https://lnkd.in/dSHSxxkF
How Important Is User Research? 🤔 User research serves as the foundation for innovation. Whether you are designing new products and services, or building new roadmaps for existing products, it is essential to understand your customers' needs. You must identify their problems and map them in the broader context of their everyday lives. With these insights, your chances of creating something genuinely new, valuable, and impactful significantly increase. At Etnetera Flow, we consider user research to be a vital component for the success of creating digital products. Led by Tomas Haimann, our design team has enhanced its user research capabilities by utilising various methodologies, such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, diary studies, field research, and more. We always personalise the research mix to best meet the project goals while taking into account the budget, timelines, and other requirements. ➡️Find out more about user research including customer success stories https://lnkd.in/dSHSxxkF #UXresearch #productdesign #innovation #productroadmap
