I am delighted to share findings from one of our recently published articles about pregnancy termination in PNG. We estimated the prevalence of pregnancy termination and determine it associated factors, particularly among married women. Overall, the prevalence of pregnancy termination was 5.3%. Among other significant factors, women who experienced intimate partner violence were twice as likely to terminate a pregnancy, while those with unplanned pregnancies were six times more likely to terminate a pregnancy. Also, we found that the likelihood of terminating a pregnancy was three times higher among women who knew about modern contraceptive methods and made independent decisions for contraceptive use. We suggest that efforts aimed at reducing unplanned pregnancies and terminations should focus on comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education and improving easy access to contraceptives for married couples. Also, post-abortion care should be integrated into the country’s legal framework and added as a critical component of existing sexual and reproductive health services in the country. This #WorldContraceptionDay, we want to make sure you have all the facts about three different types of medications that are used to support reproductive health: 💊Birth control pills: taken daily to prevent pregnancy 💊Emergency contraceptive pills: taken w/in 5 days after contraceptive failure or unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy 💊Abortion pills: taken after deciding to end a pregnancy The bottom line: contraceptives like birth control pills and emergency contraceptive pills keep you from getting pregnant, while abortion pills end a pregnancy. All three types of pills are critical to reproductive health care, and should be accessible to everyone who wants them, without barriers or stigma. As health professionals, it’s crucial that we educate young people about the risks of long-term use and overdose of analgesics, which can have serious side effects. This unsafe practice highlights a significant gap in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge, and the limited access to contraceptive options is also a major issue. One of the most effective ways to address this gap is by promoting youth-friendly services.
