Exoticism (from exotic) is a trend in art and design where creators become fascinated with ideas and styles from distant regions and draw inspiration from them. This often involves surrounding foreign cultures with mystique and fantasy which owe more to the culture of the people doing the exoticism than to the exotic cultures themselves: this process of glamorisation and stereotyping is called "exoticisation". These are scale names that were coined by western theorists, using names of foreign and exotic places. In some cases the names have a real connection to a place or culture they describe, but too often these names are unrelated to any actual musical traditions. Some are arguably racist. Many of these modes have authentic names, for example the exoticism named "Jewish" scale (1711) is called "Adonai Malakh" in the Jewish musical tradition.

Music for the Feast of the Transfiguration often includes hymns and compositions that reflect the glory and divine revelation of Jesus' transformation. Some popular choices include: 1. **"Christ, Upon the Mountain Peak"** - A traditional hymn that celebrates the Transfiguration. 2. **"‘Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here"** - Another hymn commonly sung during this feast. 3. **"O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair"** - A hymn that narrates the event of the Transfiguration. 4. **"Transfiguration" by John Weaver** - A choral anthem specifically composed for this feast. 5. **"Be Thou My Vision"** - A hymn that, while not specific to the Transfiguration, fits the theme of divine vision and glory. For classical music, consider: 1. **"Transfiguration" by Olivier Messiaen** - A piece that captures the mystical and awe-inspiring aspects of the event. 2. **"The Transfiguration" by John Tavener** - A work that reflects Tavener's spiritual and contemplative style. These selections provide a range of musical expressions suitable for celebrating the Feast of the Transfiguration.

This week i will be posting about great achievers who were trained in one field but chose to pursue their passion This is possible only when your family supports you as many had that passion but could not pursue due to family circumstances Today it is Dr L Subramanian, the Violin Maestro He stated the following in an interview We believe that music is something that enhances the creativity of a person. Logically, we are trained to elaborate a seven-note raga and make it last 45 minutes to an hour. It is like taking seven alphabets letters and writing big essays. That is what music is. If you are able to make people sit and listen for that long, you have to be tremendously focused and creative. This enhances focus, creativity and insight within us, which can be applied to any profession. Whatever profession we are in, we can focus more and create new methods of doing things. We want everybody to learn that. Music can change your personality, increase your creativity, and when you start listening to music from other cultures, you begin to become sympathetic towards them.” The important message he gives here is - What ever profession you are you can if you can focus you can excel in that profession - I am also enclosing a small clip of his performance https://lnkd.in/gUF-uvVS

#Artist or #Activist ? #KrishnaLeela or #KrishnaDichotomy? How can I NOT write something about L'Affaire #TMKrishna It is about #CarnaticMusic. It has become raging and acrimonious. I am a Thanjavuruian (a #Thiryvaiyaruian, to be precise). It was my great grandfather #ThillasthanamPanchuBhagavathar and his twin brother Narasimha Bhagavathar who were instrumental in institutionalizing the #ThiagarajaAaradhana cum #CarnaticMusicCarnival by Thiagaraja’s SishyaParampara we see, year after year. Readers of LinkedIn are a well informed lot. I don’t wish to load them with blah blahs on the subject as background. I will go straight to the present matter; and through Qs & As. Q Should #TheMusicAcademy have conferred the #SangeetaKalanidhi award to Krishna A No. Q Doesn’t he deserve it by his talent? A He does deserve it by all means. It is not doubted even by those who have decided to stay away from performing under this presidency of the MusicSadas this year Q Then, what is the problem? A Apart from talent in CarnaticMusic, the recipient of the SangeetaKalanidhi is expected to be a revered person in the business over long period. Q Revered by whom? A By Peers and knowledgeable Rasikas. Q Won’t a person be thus revered automatically when he performs so well? A No. This is not automatic. This is a #Parampara matter, not just a performance matter. Setting the saptaswaras into a raga and doing an excellent Alap does not CarnaticMusic make; it, certainly, doesn’t complete CarnaticMusic. #Keerthanas #Sahitya #Krutis are also an integral part of it. The great composers of yore are a part too. And, Bhakti in the music Krutis is also considered a part by a majority in the fraternity. Just see the Krutis (Keerthanas) known as #Classics in CarnaticMusic A person who insults the very Parampara of the art receiving this highest award is disturbing to those who believe the Parampara is the heart of this MusicSystem. And such people happen to be the stars in the trade by virtue of their excellence. Q Would you call TMKrishna a #Reformer of CarnaticMusic A No. The Profile and #ActionProgrammes of a good Reformer would be different. If he were a good Reformer, there may still be some opposition to giving this award to him as all reforms meet with some opposition. But, It wouldn’t have been this virulent. So many well known, well-meaning Vidwans of CarnaticMusic would not be considering this as Blasphemy. In the entire, long, history of the Academy, such protest hasn’t happened ever before. Differing opinions about the selection used to come in some years. But certainly never this kind of outburst, “If this person is presiding, we will not perform or participate; we boycott” All of us must think. Contd….. under “comments” below

The Mozart effect… on musicians minds… When practicing or performing Mozart, the conservative side of classical musicians tells you to never stop minding about how to articulate, tune, build the phrase, and so on… There are rules in music, and breaking them is a good practice (and healthy!), right after knowing them all from top to the bottom. Mozart practiced today, for a better classical version tomorrow. This every single time. https://lnkd.in/dcdzjgWQ
