For the pharma pricing nerds only! 🧠💊 As many of you know, I’m passionate about pricing. Recently, Joaquim Knox, a former student, shared a fascinating YouTube video with me that I’ve now watched twice: US Senate Hearing on Drug Pricing. https://lnkd.in/dM56QiCX It’s a 2.5-hour hearing where the US Senate questions the pricing of two Novo Nordisk drugs sold in the US at significantly higher prices than in Canada and Europe. The hearing includes testimony from Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen their CEO, that did a fantastic job. Here are my key takeaways: 💰 “It’s all about the price!” The CEO’s testimony underscores how central pricing is to the entire conversation. When the head of a company is defending prices in front of the Senate, it’s clear how critical pricing is for any business—and why companies need to give it the focus it deserves. 😿 The US has a systemic issue with PBMs. This video only scratches the surface of a much bigger problem. While the CEO takes the hot seat, there’s no presence of PBMs (Pharmacy Benefit Managers) or the other pharmaceutical companies who operate in the US. Their absence from the discussion speaks volumes. 🛢️ Why are we investing so much in drugs and not enough in prevention? It’s striking to see the state spending billions on treatments like GLP-1 drugs when a stronger focus on public health prevention could potentially reduce demand for these drugs altogether. We can add, too, the long-term strangulation of pharmaceutical innovation. Back in the 1950s, the FDA approved an average of 289 new medical drugs a year. But then came decades of regulatory tightening and bureaucratic engorging. The result was more input, and yet less output. Last year, the FDA approved just 118 drugs—well less than half as many as seven decades before, even as the U.S. population more than doubled and inflation-adjusted GDP septupled. If the innovation trendline from the 1950s had kept pace with population, we’d have more than 600 new drugs annually, and if it had kept pace with economic growth, we’d have more than 2000.
