Did anyone notice I was gone? My OH took me to Rome for my birthday, and it was amazing—the weather, the food, and the beautiful scenery were all so very relaxing. The only downside was my awareness of my lack of language skills. Language wasn’t offered at my very modern secondary school (giving my age away). They were trying a new style of curriculum, which, to be honest, was awful. There was no proper structure or class control. It was only due to my determination that I managed to get good grades and move on to college. I had wanted to be a teacher, but the powers that be decided I’d be a good secretary because that’s what my mother did. The truth is, I was an awful shorthand typist. I hated the lack of respect for the work I was trained to do—being “just a typist.” I tried different roles and discovered that I had a knack for learning new skills. As the “typist” role evolved into more specialized tasks, I adapted by mastering book-keeping and computer management, particularly as word processing rapidly advanced. Keeping up with these changes while raising my large family was crucial to me. Now, even though I’m still always learning skills, I regret not learning to speak another language or two. I tried one of the popular apps, but it seemed designed for the USA market—no one in Italy says “bagno/restroom.” So, I intend to find a great teacher who will take my deafness into account and help me truly learn the language. I want to remind you that I am not only a seasoned business professional but also an exceptional admin support specialist.
