Join us on Wednesday 6th for The Conduit's Green Economy Forum 🌱 B4NZ COO Hannah Cool will join Shevaun Haviland, Eva-Maria Dimitriadis and Ajaita S. to discuss 'Small Businesses, Big Impact: Driving SMEs Toward Sustainable Actions'. SMEs are vital to the global green transition, responsible for around 40% of business-sector emissions, but they often struggle to access affordable sustainable finance due to administrative burdens and a lack of awareness of available options. The discussion will explore these barriers, and how we can tackle these - including B4NZ's Project Perseus and SME Sustainability Reporting Exercise, both aimed to simplify sustainability reporting for SMEs.

On September 22, 2024 world leaders adopted the Global Digital Compact: the first international agreement on the safe, sustainable, and inclusive use of AI and digital technologies. As CODES, we are excited to see many principles and activities on digital environmental sustainability included in the Global Digital Compact. Since the launch of our Action Plan, CODES and its partners have made progress in advancing and implementing work around digital sustainability. The old Danish proverb made famous by Niels Bohr comes to mind, "predictions are very difficult, especially about the future." This is from Fintan O'Toole Ten predictions experts made about the world in 2025. All of them are wrong #1 The EU will have broken up by 2025. “The European Union might survive in some sense, but European economic, political and military relations will be governed primarily by bilateral or limited multilateral relationships that will be small in scope and not binding. Some states might maintain a residual membership in a highly modified European Union, but this will not define Europe.” (Stratfor Strategic Forecasting, 2015) Nope! #2 We will all be living in a world of augmented and virtual reality. “The screen as we know it – on your phone, your computer and your TV – will disappear and be replaced by eyewear. Not the geeky Google Glass, but stylish equivalents to what the well-dressed fashionistas are wearing today. The result will be a massive disruption in a number of industries ranging from consumer retail, to real estate, education, travel, entertainment and the fundamental ways we operate as humans.” (CERN, May 2015) Thank goodness, also a big no. #3 We will all be ashamed of our carbon footprints. “In 2025, carbon footprints will be viewed as socially unacceptable, much like drink-driving is today.” (World Economic Forum, June 2020) Alas massive personal carbon footprints – private planes, vast houses, hyper-conspicuous consumption – are still all the rage.
