Choosing a CEO is one of the most important duties corporate boards undertake. However, I am sure we can all picture examples of when this has gone wrong. In the piece linked below, Bill George shares five common mistakes boards make when selecting leaders: 1. Not adequately preparing successors from within the company 2. Choosing a successor who promises to lead the company in the same way as the current CEO 3. Letting the current CEO dominate the hiring process 4. A board’s commitment to encouraging innovation within the company can have a significant impact on performance, and over the past few years, there has been increasing demand for guidance on how to effectively foster innovation while ensuring execution on the current range of products and services. We recently conducted a survey of U.S. public company board members with Corporate Board Member. Of those surveyed, 100% of those on high-performing boards agreed with the statement “Our board has a strong commitment to encouraging innovation within the company,” while only 85% of the rest agreed.
