What is anxious attachment and how is it influencing workplace behaviours? Anxious attachment often stems from childhood experiences where comfort and security were inconsistently provided. This can lead to a deep fear of abandonment and a constant need for reassurance, affecting adult behaviour, especially at work. In the workplace, anxious attachment may manifest as: Seeking Approval - Constant need for feedback and validation. Struggling with Autonomy - Difficulty making independent decisions. Sensitivity to Criticism - Viewing feedback as personal failure. Overcommitment - Taking on too much to gain approval. Relationship Challenges - Difficulty building and maintaining professional relationships. What can be done about this? Recognising these patterns is the first step towards addressing anxious attachment in both work and personal life. Being present with your emotions and becoming aware of what surfaces is key. The next time you feel anxious or nervous about an impending deadline at work, pause and reflect: What are you actually feeling in the moment? How does this connect to past experiences? By bringing these feelings into your awareness, you can start to understand and integrate them, allowing for more authentic, flexible and appropriate responses in the present. #psychotherapy #gestalt #hypnotherapy

Since I posted about American Psychological Association's article on "How heat affects the mind", they have now released a podcast on the topic: Last year—2023—was the world’s warmest on record, and 2024 could bring another record-shattering summer. Psychologist Kim Meidenbauer, PhD, and public health researcher Amruta Nori-Sarma, PhD, discuss how heat affects people’s mental health, emotions, and even cognitive abilities; the link between heat, violence, and aggression; who is most vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat; and what policymakers could be doing to mitigate its effects. https://lnkd.in/dgwxNGbm
The UK's recent warm weather has me re-reading an article in the American Psychological Association's member magazine 'Monitor on Psychology' entitled, "How heat affects the mind". Yes, continuous or extreme exposure to heat causes hyperthermia and 10-28% of those experience persistent brain damage and in less extreme heat existing mental health symptoms are exacerbated. However, of more regular use, lower exposure heat stress also creates aggression in individuals which generates responsive aggression in others - simply put, arguments are more common when people are hot. Intuitively, we know this, but in the workplace this means that conflict is more likely during the summer months. Additionally, exposure to heat stress is linked to a reduction in cognition. So, problem solving and collaboration are more difficult or less productive during the summer months and could even lead to the aforementioned conflict. Like my last post, these are real-world examples where self-awareness, emotional intelligence and adaptability are critical in real life to reduce future organisational issues in the workplace. Simply recognising the risk of warm weather, being more connected to people and then consciously choosing when to have combative or collaborative discussions could make all the difference.

If you’re wondering how to implement these findings in your life, make simple, direct and specific goals for yourself. Mark when you complete the goals – the feedback can help you keep going. If you’re feeling particularly drained, take short breaks. Even brief rests of less than two minutes can restore capacity for mental work.

Will I succeed in behaviour change? Or will I go mad trying? When I look at photos of me onstage, I notice that I hunch quite a bit. For years I've noticed this, and tried a few things to correct it, with no impact. So now I've set a timer on my watch for five minutes to remind me to straighten up. And then I hit the little curly arrow in the bottom right corner to restart the timer for another five minutes. I've been doing for two days now, and it's almost starting to work. Maybe I'm creating a new habit! But I AM going crazy. ----------------------------- I’m Graham. #therapistdiary ⚠️ Is there a connection between IQ and Anxiety❓Well, the answer is YES exclamation ‼️ ✨It’s often assumed that higher #intelligence leads to greater #success, yet research suggests that people with high IQs are more likely to experience high levels of #anxiety. Yes, you read that right‼️ While the correlation isn’t universal, several studies shed light 💡 on this intriguing connection. 💡One study found that individuals with higher IQs may be more prone to overthinking and ruminating on potential problems, which can fuel anxiety. This heightened #awareness of future scenarios and a tendency to overanalyze can create a constant mental “loop,” contributing to #stress and worry. 💡Another piece of research indicated that intelligent people may also be more self-critical, which can amplify anxiety. With a keen ability to spot flaws in themselves or in the world 🌍 around them, these individuals often struggle with perfectionism and fear of failure, which can trigger emotional distress. 💡 In fact, experts are often the opinion that gifted individuals might experience social isolation due to feeling different from their peers. This sense of disconnection can lead to feelings of #loneliness and anxiety, despite their intellectual capabilities. 💡While intelligence offers many advantages, it also brings its own set of challenges. 💡Understanding the connection between high IQ and anxiety can help us support individuals in managing stress in more effective ways. 💡It’s a reminder that mental #wellbeing is #multifaceted, and even the most intelligent among us may need #help navigating emotional challenges. #mentalhealthmatters #drshambhavisamir #uurjamanifestlightwithin #emptymyndscape #diversity #psychologistspeaks #selfcare #socialmindfulness

I’ve felt it myself, and I can totally understand where this comes from. When there’s so much talk about social impact and corporate purpose, it’s easy to start feeling anxious about whether your work really aligns with your values. I’ve been there—wondering if what I’m doing truly makes a difference or contributes to something greater. This kind of “purpose anxiety” is especially common among younger employees, who often prioritise meaningful work over just having a job. They want to feel like their work matters, that it reflects their personal beliefs, and sometimes, when that connection isn’t clear, it can lead to a lot of inner tension. This is a difficult situation, but it shows you care about your work. It’s okay to feel this way, and it’s important to keep exploring and seeking out that alignment between your work and your values. Sometimes, it takes time and small steps to bridge that gap, but the journey is worth it. Stay Strong Nishtha 🌼 P.S. Don’t hesitate to DM me if you are facing such pressure, I’m here to talk to you and provide support. #anxiety #purposeanxiety #psychology #mentalhealth

𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝑹𝒂𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑲𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒂𝒕 11 𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒎𝒚 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒔 𝑰 𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆. In Mortal Kombat 11, there's a powerful scene where Raiden, usually a noble protector, becomes consumed by the dark influence of Shinnok's amulet. For a brief time, he's transformed into "Dark Raiden" - where he suddenly becomes dangerously aggressive and lashes out at everyone around him, with his eyes turning red he affirms... "I do not need trust, I demand obedience" This dramatic shift showcases how even the most controlled of men can feel overtaken by forces within during #andropause and also resonates with me personally, as it mirrors my own experiences. For those unfamiliar, andropause is the gradual decline in testosterone levels that men experience as they age and boy do I sometimes feel the powerful impact on my mental health with changing moods and energy levels. I sometimes feel like Raiden with the amulet around my neck: the same person, but occasionally overwhelmed by feelings of irritability, fatigue, and even flashes of anger that don’t quite feel like “me.”... MEN - WHO CAN RELATE TO THIS? The other day, for instance, My mum was having a conversation with me when she pulled up in the car and without me realising the conversation got heated and I found myself irritated and angry out of nothing. In corporate life, where professionalism and composure are valued, these changes can suddenly arrive out of nowhere. Imagine you are a HR Manager and you walk into work to have a conversation with a male colleague who is normally quite pleasant and uplifting to talk to, only this time he appears strangely withdrawn, short answered and a bit irritabile and you are stood there in complete shock, just like Raiden's allies were when they saw his transformation - That could be Andropause and this can make men appear moody, disengaged, or overly reactive, which is why it’s essential for workplaces to be aware of this potential shift and support their employees as they age. Before jumping straight to the disciplinary room, stop to understand what is happening. Just like Raiden needed his warriors to make him aware of his very different behaviour and helped him rediscover himself, Men at work need support around them to help them connect deeper with their bodies, understand themselves better and feel supported and heard out. Reach out to me for your FREE discovery call if you need support and understanding of mens' mental health challenges during Andropause in your workplace. To re-adapt a line in the mk11 story from Raiden... Blocking and unblocking people can reflect unresolved emotional turmoil, impacting mental well-being. It's crucial to recognize when to withdraw from relationships that no longer serve us. 🔶 EMOTIONAL TOLL : Constantly engaging with individuals who drain our energy can lead to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. Discarding such relationships promotes emotional healing and self-worth recovery. 🔶 FLAWS IN HUMAN NATURE : Everyone has flaws, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. Rather than seeking new connections as a solution, it's vital to address issues directly or let go of toxic ties that hinder personal growth. 🔶 CYCLES OF DISAPPOINTMENT : Changing partners often results in encountering similar issues. Long-term relationships may require honest communication or a clean break to avoid repeating harmful patterns. ✳️ Ending relationships with certain individuals can significantly benefit emotional and mental well-being. Key reasons include: 😶🌫️ EMOTIONAL DRAIN : Toxic relationships often lead to feelings of rejection and abandonment, which can exacerbate anxiety and depression. 😶🌫️ PERSONAL GROWTH : Discarding unhealthy connections allows for self-reflection and personal development, fostering healthier future relationships. 😶🌫️ AVOIDING CYCLES : Continuously engaging with flawed individuals can perpetuate cycles of disappointment; distancing oneself helps break this pattern. Ultimately, recognizing when to let go is crucial for maintaining one's emotional health and pursuing more fulfilling connections. Saying goodbye can create space for healthier connections and personal development. #PersonalGrowth #Psychology #mentalhealthmatters #PersonalityDevelopment #EmotionalIntelligence
