Was great to be able to speak at the Victorian Greenhouse Alliances conference yesterday. I shared the stage with ICLEI's Sharin Govender and City of Hobart's Jessica Robbins on how sub-national governments and communities can influence federal climate targets and UN climate #COP processes. My talk centred on: 1. Why 2035 targets and Nationally Determined Contributions are so important and why local governments should care 2. What it means to be 1.5 aligned, and the importance of science based approaches to target setting. For Australia this means at least 90% by 2035 and net zero before 2040. 3. Australias role in phasing out fossil fuels and replacing with clean exports 4. What local governments can do to help shift the dial and help lift Australian Federal climate ambition My 10th alliances conference and always gets bigger and better each year. Such a great governance model for regional climate action! Well done to all the organisers this year Steve Turnock Jan Wisniewski Scott McKenry Fran Macdonald Carole Hammond Annika Kearton Tiffany Harrison Sue Phillips.(Photo: Plenary with Psychology for a Safe Climate)

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌍 While many social challenges are currently taking up a lot of attention, climate change must not take a back seat. The CS Science Communication GmbH and the Helmholtz Association REKLIM have therefore visualized the ABC of climate change on an informative poster. This poster will be distributed not only at three of our German locations but also to secondary schools in the surrounding districts. VEKA AG, GEALAN Fenster-Systeme GmbH and VEKA Umwelttechnik are sponsoring this initiative in Germany to provide schools with high-quality educational material. Our goal is to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of addressing climate change. This initiative coincides with the #COP29 last month in Baku, reminding us all of the importance of taking action and responsibility. Check out the German poster here: https://lnkd.in/g7xczGSb Let’s work together to sensitize the next generation to climate protection and equip them with the tools they need to create a sustainable future! The Women Green The Way (#WGTW) speaker series, focusing on climate adaptation in the built environment, commenced on April 22 with a celebration of Earth Day. Gregory May, Aaron Huang, and Bonnie So set the stage by emphasizing the importance of cross-border cooperation for building climate resilience. Over 80 professionals participated, engaging in discussions aimed at driving tangible change. Moderator Wendy Ding skillfully guided the conversation, ensuring progress towards actionable outcomes. Thomasin (Tommy) Crowley highlighted the role of ratings in driving climate responses, while keynote speaker David Gottfried captured minds with his visionary journey in launching the global green building movement. David's passion for decarbonization through the World Green Building Council served as an inspiring example for all. Panelists Agnes K Y Tai, PhD 戴洁莹, Mary McHale, and Sophia Wong shared the industrial regional insight and the need for collaborative, cross-sector solutions. The event sparked thought-provoking questions that revealed new areas for action. Key takeaways include: 1. Urgent action needed: Participants emphasized the importance of implementing “carrots and sticks” to drive change. This includes the induction of carbon taxes, incentives, and sustainable decision-making to drive climate action. 2. Address embodied carbon: It accounts for 11% of global emissions and could exceed 50% of real estate emissions by 2035. 3. Transform existing buildings: Retrofitting inefficient structures is crucial despite the challenges. Together, we can create a sustainable built environment. WIFA thanks all those who participated in this event as collectively we can make a difference on greening the way. Watch the event highlight: https://lnkd.in/djqSN5Dh WIFA would be interested in your opinion on which thought leaders we should invite to our next WGTW roundtable. Jazreel Cheng (she/her)

The Scottish Climate Intelligence Service (SCIS) is now on LinkedIn! 🎉 The #SCIS is a climate change capacity-building programme for local authorities in Scotland, combining a national digital platform and a support service co-designed by the delivery partners and local authorities from across the country. Our digital platform - ClimateView - will collate area-wide emissions data to create standardised emissions inventories across all 32 of Scotland's local authorities. It will also calculate and visualise the emissions reduction impact of particular projects and interventions taken by local authorities in delivering their own area-wide emissions reduction strategies. Through workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions and 1-2-1s, our tailored support service will help local authorities to build the skills, knowledge and influence to use this data to better plan, monitor and deliver #climateaction at the scale and pace required for achieving their #netzero targets. The SCIS is delivered by a partnership between Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, ClimateView and the Improvement Service. This partnership brings together expert climate knowledge, practitioner insights and a track record of successfully supporting local authorities to deliver high quality, efficient local services both in Scotland and across the world. Follow us here to stay up to date with the SCIS journey and share this page with any colleagues and contacts who might be interested! 💚 THIS is why we do #AppliedCreativityLabs (www.weareive.org/acl) with children and young people to help them find new solutions to climate change issues.....We can't deliver them without funding/support/sponsorship. 🫶Please do get in touch if you are interested in helping to sponsor us to work with young people! - sarah@weareive.org ⏰ There's no avoiding this anymore...we have to change how we live and work - and fast. 🫖This new climate action report from Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission is brilliant...it's a long read so make a cuppa! ♻️'Act like it’s an emergency. Climate change will impact on us all – and we’re perilously close to the point at which we will trigger dangerous levels of warming. Action on climate and nature must be right at the heart of all decision-making. The population of Yorkshire and the Humber is larger than some countries, so what we do and don’t do really matters. 🤝To have a chance of meeting the net zero target, we need to cut our emissions rapidly by moving away from fossil fuels. That involves continuing the rapid expansion of renewable energy, investing in smart energy grids, and upgrading our homes, buildings, businesses and transport systems to reduce their energy demand. We also need to switch to a resource efficient, circular economy and rethink consumption in key areas such as food, fashion and flying. 🍃Crucially, we need to recognise that the climate crisis goes hand-in-hand with the nature crisis, and we can only address one by also addressing the other. 🌳 We must put nature first in decision-making and promote climate actions that will aid nature’s recovery. That means making more space for nature, as well as restoring peat bogs planting trees where appropriate and enabling more people to realise the wellbeing benefits of using natural green spaces. We also need to invest in our readiness and resilience in the face of growing climate impacts. These include extreme weather events such as floods and severe heatwaves, but also threats to our food supply from failed harvests or new diseases such as tick-borne illnesses. 🏡 This will involve adapting our homes and communities, our water, energy, transport and communications infrastructure, and our farming and food systems, and restoring nature. All of these aspects of resilience are essential to our future health and wellbeing....This is a huge agenda that spans decades. 💡 More than anything, we need leaders – in politics, business, civil society and beyond – to embrace change, to be open to new thinking, and to take the necessary actions.
