Official British Film Institute (BFI) statistics show Barbie, Oppenheimer and Wonka were the three highest grossing films in the British Isles, 2023. Two of these were based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on the outskirts of Watford. 📣 "Hertfordshire is the jewel in the crown of the British film industry," Lucy Frazer, Department for Culture, Media and Sport SoS, tells me. "Millions of pounds are spent on film and high-end TV production in Hertfordshire each year and the county’s success lies in its attractiveness to world-renowned studios and its highly talented workforce." 📣 Howard Berry says: "We have always been home to iconic productions - 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Where Eagles Dare (1968), The Shining (1980), and of course the Star Warses and the Indiana Joneses. Barbie and Wonka are similar in that these are films that are not going to disappear and be forgotten about. Barbie in particular is going to be one of those films we are going to be analysing and talking about for years to come - and Hertfordshire made it." 🎬 207 feature films started shooting during 2023, which is 13 fewer than reported in 2022. 💷 The total UK production spend for the total number of film starts was £1.36billion, 31 per cent down on the £1.97billion reported in 2022 Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/er6AxfPf #LDReporter #Watford

Want to bring positive attention to your community or region? Consider how film production has created not only local pride in the community but a national perception that is desired and positive. Without a purposeful effort to develop a local national identity, the risk is that an identity will be formed based on negative political interests and/or the "if it bleeds it leads" approach to the daily night news. Be proactive and take steps to determine how your community should be perceived. How Cambridge's film scene has grown and created a 'sense of pride' for city "There's a great sense of pride and excitement to see Cambridge looked at in a different light and depicted on the big screen." Cambridge's film scene has also brought foot traffic and tourism to its downtown cores, which has had a positive impact for local businesses, said Brian Kennedy, executive director of the Downtown Cambridge BIA. "We have seen tremendous impact from productions being filmed here, especially when it comes to people visiting the area, like tourists, to see where some of these notable TV show and movies have been filmed." A great opportunity for post-secondary schools in the area to offer programs in film production. https://lnkd.in/gEMhTsW7

📿On this day, September 20, 1946, delayed because of WWII, the first Cannes Film Festival began, and it became one of cinema's major annual #events. ⁉How much do you know about one of the world's most famous cinema festivals? Find out now by playing our #triviaquiz: https://lnkd.in/evuJgr3n. And make sure to share your score in the comment section! 3 LESSER-KNOWN #FACTS ABOUT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 👉It Was Originally Created to Counter Fascism: The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1939 as a response to the Venice Film Festival, which had become heavily influenced by fascist regimes in Europe at the time. The inaugural event, however, was interrupted by the #outbreak of World War II and didn't fully launch until 1946. 👉The Palme d'Or Didn't Exist Until 1955: While the Cannes Film Festival is now synonymous with the prestigious Palme d'Or, the award wasn’t introduced until 1955. Before that, films were awarded the “Grand Prix du Festival International du Film.” The design of the Palme d’Or, a golden palm leaf, was #inspired by the coat of arms of the city of Cannes. 👉Scandals Have Played a Big Role in Its History: Over the years, Cannes has been no stranger to controversy. From protests to film withdrawals, one of the most notable moments was in 1968, when the festival was canceled midway due to widespread protests in #France, including filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, who disrupted screenings in solidarity with the May '68 movement.

We are proposing to hold space for the conversation on indie filmmaking at this critical juncture in Scotland. We are starting a Scottish producers circle aimed at discussing a sustainable way forward for the industry: For this first edition, we’re screening Ryan Hendrick’s ‘Mercy Falls’, starring Lauren Lyle (‘Outlander’, ‘Vigil’, ‘Karen Pirie’) as a case study. An exploratory conversation of where we are and models available to Scottish producers will follow with Director Ryan Hendrick and line producer / first assistant director Remo Catani (‘Mercy Falls’, ‘Schemers’, ‘Silent Roar’). Attendees are invited and indeed encouraged to participate and share their thoughts on what’s working and what’s not. As a conversation starter - Ryan Hendrick put together this trailer of independent films made in Scotland that have achieved theatrical release in the last two decades. Event hosted by: Maureen Hascoet, Firewalker Pictures. Venue - Blythswood hotel screening room Date - Tuesday 28th of May. From 6.30pm https://lnkd.in/g_Hd7xen See you there!
