Sea turtles are fascinating creatures with several unique characteristics and behaviours: 🐢 Species Diversity: There are seven species of sea turtles: Green, Loggerhead, Kemp's Ridley, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Flatback, and Leatherback. 🌊 Migration: Sea turtles undertake extensive migrations between feeding and nesting grounds. Some species, migrate thousands of kilometres across entire ocean basins. 🐢 Longevity: Sea turtles can live for several decades, with some species living up to 80 years or more. 🌊 Nesting: Female sea turtles return to the same beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, a behaviour known as natal homing. They typically lay clutches of eggs in nests dug in the sand, and after an incubation period of about 45 to 70 days, the hatchlings emerge and make their way to the ocean. Overall, sea turtles play a crucial role in marine ecosystems, helping maintain healthy coral reefs and seagrass beds. We hope everyone is enjoying their summer!🌞 This month’s story is called “Corals’ Conundrum”! 🪸 Here is part 1, “Coral Reef Biodiversity hotspots” 🐳 Once upon a time, in the sparkling waters of the tropics, there lay a magical world beneath the waves. This world was filled with vibrant colors and bustling with life, known as the coral reefs. These reefs were like bustling cities in the ocean, home to countless species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and many other fascinating creatures. The coral polyps, tiny animals that form the backbone of these reefs, built magnificent structures that provided shelter and food for their underwater neighbors. The coral reefs were not just beautiful; they were incredibly important for the health of our planet. They acted like underwater rainforests, supporting a vast array of life and helping to maintain the balance of the ocean's ecosystems. Each species in the reef, from the smallest shrimp to the largest fish, played a vital role in keeping this delicate system in harmony. However, this wondrous world was under threat. Human activities, such as pollution and overfishing, along with the effects of climate change, were putting immense pressure on these ecosystems. Scientists and conservationists were working hard to protect and preserve these reefs, knowing that their survival was crucial for maintaining global biodiversity. Without coral reefs, many marine species would struggle to survive, and the health of the entire ocean could be at risk. Lionfish in Their Natural Habitat At 40 meters in the waters of Bali, I captured this video of a lionfish resting in a barrel sponge—a fascinating behavior I first noticed during an expedition with the XL Catlin Seaview Survey in the Caribbean. On that expedition, I repeatedly saw lionfish using barrel sponges as shelter, which piqued my curiosity. In their native Indo-Pacific habitat, like here in Bali, this behavior fits into a healthy, balanced ecosystem. However, in the Caribbean, where lionfish are an invasive species, the story is very different. These voracious predators consume vast numbers of juvenile reef fish, including species crucial to reef health, and their rapid reproduction gives them a serious advantage. Without natural predators to keep them in check, lionfish populations have exploded, destabilizing ecosystems and undermining coral reef resilience. This video is a powerful reminder of how the same species can be both a marvel in its native environment and a major threat in invasive regions. It underscores the critical importance of managing invasive species and maintaining marine biodiversity. Also known as Parque Nacional do Jaú, this is one of South America's largest forest reserves and a UNESCO WOrld Heritage Site. Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, it protectsa range of species, including the margay, jaguar, giant otter and the Amazonian manatee. L: Great Green Wal, Nigeria. Started in 2007, this African Union-led initiative is restoring land affected by desertification across the width of Africa, planting trees and other vegetation while implementing sustainable land management practices. This also provides people and communities in the area with increased economic opportunities, food security, and climate resilience. E: Pilbara lslands Nature Reserves, Australia. Located by one of the Pilbara lsland Nature Reserves, one of 20 nature reserves in Australia that help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats, and a number of threatened or endangered species-including marine turtles, shorebirds and seabirds. #google #earth

These gelatinous creatures, known for their ethereal beauty and sometimes painful stings, are a common sight during the warmer months. The most frequently encountered species along Israeli shores is the Rhopilema nomadica, or nomad jellyfish, which has been making its presence felt with increasing frequency in recent years. Jellyfish in Israel are not just a marine curiosity but also a subject of scientific study and environmental concern. The influx of jellyfish, particularly during their blooming periods, can have significant impacts on local ecosystems and human activities. For instance, large swarms of jellyfish can affect fishing, tourism, and even the operation of desalination plants, which are vital for Israel's water supply. Despite the challenges they pose, jellyfish also play an essential role in marine ecosystems. They serve as both predators and prey, helping to maintain the balance of oceanic life. Additionally, their presence can indicate changes in marine environments, often linked to factors such as climate change, overfishing, and pollution. For beachgoers in Israel, it's important to be aware of jellyfish during the summer months. While their stings can be painful, they are rarely dangerous. Today is #WorldTurtleDay! 🐢 ☀ Teeming with nearly 2.5% of the world’s #biodiversity, the Osa Peninsula of #CostaRica is one of the #Hawksbill sea turtle’s most important nesting sites in the #Pacific region of Central America. Hawksbill #seaturtles play an important role in maintaining healthy marine and coastal #ecosystems. Unfortunately, illegal human activities and #climatechange are damaging the Hawksbills’ #habitat, compromising their ability to eat and reproduce. Currently, the @iucnssc classifies the Hawksbill sea #turtle as critically #endangered. 🐢    🐚 Our initiative, Ancestral Tides, seeks to conserve coastal ecosystems and endangered species such as the Hawksbill #seaturtle, while revitalizing associated biocultural traditions. By linking community-led conservation efforts across Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico, we are working to build regional solidarity in coastal conservation and facilitate cultural dialogues. 🌴    💚 We are grateful for the #indigenous and local communities with whom we have the privilege of working. ***How do nature and modernization live together?*** Galápagos, we're comingThe Galápagos is one of the best-preserved natural gems in the world, perhaps the last place in the world where dinosaurs are still looking to survive.  Galápagos Conservancy was selected to be a long-term protection and restoration region, mainly due to its’ brilliant mosaic of life, including more than 2,000 species found nowhere else on Earth. The Galapagos Islands area situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1,000 km from the Ecuadorian coast. This archipelago and its immense marine reserve is known as the unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Its geographical location at the confluence of three ocean currents makes it one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity reflects the processes that formed the islands. These processes, together with the extreme isolation of the islands, led to the development of unusual plant and animal life – such as marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, giant tortoises, huge cacti, endemic trees and the many different subspecies of mockingbirds and finche (whc.unesco.org.)  It is an honor to be selected to take part in an international environmental conservation project in Santa Cruz, Galapagos, we are, in our area of expertise, providing a solution for ecological solid waste management and treatment, the challenge of planning and setting up a site for recycling 100% of the waste without sewage, without emissions, without odor and with minimum noise and visibility that matches the site. Our rule, minimal environmental fingerprints, we are visitors in our globe, our duty is to preserve it to our next generations.It is an honor to be selected to participate in an international environmental conservation project in Santa Cruz, Galapagos, in our area of expertise, providing a solution for the ecological management and treatment of solid waste. Our challenge is planning and implementing a Site for recycling of 100% of the solid waste without wastewater, without emissions, without odor and with minimal noise and visibility, to match the uniqueness to the place.
