Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy’s Post

Clean energy update: OCED awarded $50M in initial phase funding to Project Cypress, a promising direct air capture (DAC) demonstration project. This first tranche of funding is for activities that are expected to take two to three years and include planning, design, and community and labor engagement. Project Cypress is the first of its scale in the United States, anticipated to remove more than a million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere at full capacity – a staggering feat in DAC technology. Together with awardee Battelle and subrecipients Climeworks and Heirloom, OCED will support Project Cypress through expert project management oversight at each step of the process to ensure its safety and success. OCED’s DAC Hubs program aims to demonstrate and deploy direct air capture technologies to reduce emissions across industries, encourage widespread adoption of the technology, and significantly reduce legacy carbon pollution.
