Hot tip from Common Great Founder and CEO Ariel Glassman: Behavior-based donor segmentation can transform your fundraising. 🚀 As nonprofit leaders, we know that every donor counts. But are we really making the most of our donor relationships? One key to unlocking better fundraising results lies in how we understand and engage our supporters. Enter the power of behavior-based segmentation 🔍 Donor segmentation is nothing new, but focusing on behavior-based segmentation can revolutionize your strategy. By analyzing how donors engage with your organization—frequency of giving, event attendance, volunteer activity, how they participate in your programs, etc.—you can create tailored communications that speak directly to their motivations. 🎯Why It Works: 1. Personalized Engagement: Donors feel seen and valued when they receive content that resonates with their interests and actions. 2. Increased Retention: Segmenting by behavior can lead to higher retention rates, as you're addressing donors' unique preferences and increasing their emotional investment. 3. Higher Lifetime Value: Engaged donors are more likely to give over the long term, participate in campaigns, and become advocates for your cause. Let’s unpack an example 📊 Say a donor consistently gives around year-end, but also volunteers for events. Instead of sending a generic "year-end appeal," you could personalize your outreach by thanking them for their volunteer efforts and highlighting how their gifts and volunteer role make a tangible impact during key moments of the year. By using donor behavior to inform your communication strategy, you're not only improving fundraising outcomes but also fostering deeper, more meaningful relationships with your supporters.

This article highlights a critical point for nonprofits: relying on intuition or traditional methods without leveraging data can lead to stagnation. The idea that "If you build it, they will come" is a romantic notion, but in reality, it’s not enough to drive success in today’s competitive environment. The four signs mentioned—trusting gut feelings over data, generic fundraising messages, under-communication, and resistance to change—are all symptoms of a nonprofit that may be stuck in outdated practices. First-Party Data. It's not hard. Really. We teach it to our kids. "Please. Thank you. You're Welcome." These are words that are INTERACTIVE. In other words, we're paying attention to another person who's engaged with us somehow, and then we act accordingly. ✅ Kids do it (sometimes). ✅ Adults do it (usually). ✅ Companies do it (if they are successful). ❌ Governments do it... (well, the analogy had to break down somewhere) ☑ Nonprofits can do it to. We need to notice, remember and acknowledge when someone engages with us. It's not hard. We can do this. You're welcome. Want to learn how to leverage first-party data with your organization? Check out our latest blog post for insights and best practices. #nonprofit #fundraising #firstpartydata #please #thankyou

When you're involved in fundraising, whether as a campaign manager, peer-to-peer organizer, or in any solicitation capacity within your organization, your goal is to be the go-to person in your donors’ lives who connects them to their greatest impact. And to be relevant, you need to show up. So what’s stopping you? Limited resources? Time? Not knowing enough about them to play an active role in their lives??? Or, maybe, a little of all of the above… When we meet with organizations about engaging with their participants, we always emphasize the importance of the "rule of seven" in cultivation. This concept suggests that between each fundraising request, there should be seven meaningful touchpoints with donors. In theory, the rule of seven sounds great, but in practice, it can be challenging. How many times can you say thank you? How many postcards can you send? Simply repeating the same interactions can become monotonous and ineffective. To truly master the rule of seven, you need to understand what's important to your supporters and find ways to connect with them genuinely. https://lnkd.in/ekwuW2rh

Every stage of the digital fundraising process plays a crucial role in engaging donors and driving contributions. Within the Awareness Stage, organizations should be striving to raise visibility and capture attention across various digital platforms. Social media channels like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter become invaluable tools for sharing impactful stories, updates, and campaigns that can help peek interest in your mission among diverse audiences. ⤵️ As donors express interest and curiosity, they move into the Interest Stage, where the focus shifts to empowering them to become advocates for the cause. Peer-to-peer fundraising initiatives become instrumental, allowing supporters to create personal fundraising pages and mobilize their networks for contributions to amplify reach and strengthen community engagement. Within the Consideration Stage shift your focus to fostering emotional connections through visual storytelling [videos, infographics, etc] that show the impact of your orgs work. ⤵️ As donors transition from interest to commitment, they reach the Conversion Stage. Here we work on optimizing the donation experience, making it seamless and accessible. Invest in mobile-responsive design to ensure donation forms and websites are user-friendly across devices. Once a donation is secured, the journey continues into the Retention Stage, where data and personalized communication become instrumental in sustaining donor relationships. Nonprofits leverage data analytics to understand donor behavior, preferences, and giving patterns. Tailored communication strategies, based on these insights, help nurture long-term connections and foster donor loyalty. ⤵️ Engagement stage is where you can connect with donors on a deeper level. Take what you know about your donor or donor audience and explore experiences and opportunities for them that will foster community engagement. When your donor reached the Stewardship Stage, you need to be focussed on cultivating a culture of gratitude and ongoing meaningful and tailored communication. Personalized thank-you notes, impact stories, etc will help demonstrate appreciation and highlighting the impact of their support. Ready to embark on applying the funnel concepts to your donor strategy? Let's talk! #MooreFundraisingSolutions #WisconsinNonprofits #NonprofitSupport #DigitalFundraising
