I started this book publishing journey not to build my business or take it even further. I wrote a book to help others succeed. And not just to succeed as I had as a global corporate executive at GE followed by Johnson & Johnson, but to exceed beyond what I had accomplished. However, along my journey I discovered that the book publishing reminded me a lot of corporate America. It too was about power, influence and often who you knew, not what you knew or in the case of sharing your knowledge. We all know that every bestseller book isn’t about its content being something that everyone wants to read - if it were only that simple. Most importantly for me, when I looked around there were few if any published authors in my book genre of business books that looked like me within the institution of book publishing. I met a lot of Black and Brown authors that were self-published, but few business book published authors. And the more questions I asked about why this was thr case, the fewer answers I received of those who were in the publishing industry. So I stopped asking and decided to get to work. And trust me, it has not been easy. The publishing industry is often a shrouded world of book publishers, agents, PR firms and their publicists, editors and even authors who have not welcomed me with open arms. I truly found out what power was all about in this industry. Some individuals never responded and still haven’t after months and months of follow-up. And in my many conversations often with some of these major publishers, they said one thing, but clearly had little if any track record in doing the needed work. Better yet when I truly looked at the numbers they touted, what they said vs. what they did or truly stood for, it didn’t add up for me. In summary, I found was that many in the industry were perfectly comfortable with the way things were and still are working called exclusivity. I believe in understanding the rules and playing the game of power, but to achieve your goals to ultimately make it your own game. I wrote a book about this. So my goal with “The Business Behind The Book” summit became the same. To share what I learned and knew to have more women and diverse individuals as published authors in the marketplace and bring those experts who also believed this along with me. This work is about our economic empowerment and financial inclusion full stop. According to IBISWorld data, this is a 44.3 billion industry measured by revenue as of 2023. Tell me why should we not benefit too? This is no different than what I tell those individuals who attend my professional development programs - we’re playing to exceed. Exceeding means your financial success too - simply stated what you get paid for the work that you do. I encourage all my business colleagues to watch this. You may want to start right at the 4 min. mark. Rick Sapio is an M&A advisor in Dallas, Texas (focused on business transactions exceeding $100 Million). He reached out to me this summer about my film M&A. He wanted to show it all over the world through the business groups EO and YPO. He hired the president of YPO as his own CEO a couple years ago and he has been a member of EO since 1990. We had two Zoom calls in July but he had to reschedule the 3rd stating he wasn't feeling well. The next Zoom call had to be cancelled with no future rescheduling as he stated he learned he had Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. That's typically a death sentence. He stopped working that day. It changed the tone of our relationship and I emailed him back and forth during the fall about more important things and around Christmas. Yesterday I found this video of him speaking in February this year to EO Dallas. I'm sharing this with you because I want you to see an extremely successful person being real. There is no pretend here and watch how impactful it is. When I film people, I have to strip away all that pretend nonsense and find the real person in there because we as humans can tell when someone is just acting. We are bombarded with it on almost everything we see now. Too many have also lost the beautiful part of humanity: sharing the challenges we are facing and the lessons we are learning in a genuine way with the hope to help others. I promise you that if you invest the time to watch this, you will love people more and have a desire to be genuine. (Notice the reaction from the audience!) I also promise you that if you are 'real' and don't act, people will want to work with you. We don't need more pretenders out there. No one cares about fake books, written by someone else (or now ChatGDP), fake accolades, fake infomercial programs, fake news pieces, and everything else about the financial industry (and most other industries) that makes me want to vomit. That's what Instagram is all about. The world is starving for truth speaking, competent humans who have a real drive to help people. Again, I'm sharing this with the hope that it persuades someone who is lost in the 'pretend' to explore the 'real'.
