I firmly believe that the idea of 'Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas' (PURA) put forward by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a well-known scientist, and former President of India, is still relevant today. The PURA concept aims to reduce the gap between rural and urban areas by bringing urban facilities and infrastructure to rural areas. This would lead to an improvement in the quality of life and promote rural development. The PURA concept aims to bridge the rural-urban divide by bringing urban facilities and infrastructure to rural areas, thus improving the quality of life, and stimulating rural development. Moreover, the implementation of ‘PURA’ will minimize excessive dependence on a few cities and promote balanced regional development in the country. This picture was captured after the session during my FDP (Fully Residential Faculty Development Program for 15 Weeks) days at IIM Ahmadabad in September 2010.

V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, discusses the NIRF Rankings 2024, where the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M) has continued its dominance. IIT Madras retained its position as the number one institution in the country in both the overall and engineering categories. This marks the eighth consecutive year that IIT Madras has secured the top spot in engineering. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have once again dominated the top 10 rankings in the overall category. Following IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, secured the second position. The third, fourth, and fifth spots were taken by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur, respectively. IIT Kharagpur ranked sixth, while AIIMS Delhi took the seventh position. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati occupied the eighth and ninth spots, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, completing the top ten. How do the top schools stack up across various parameters in the recently released NIRF rankings by the Government of India?   1. IIT Delhi leads in Research and Practice, securing the top spot.  2. IIM Ahmedabad ranks 1st in Teaching and Learning Resources.  3. IIM Mumbai takes the lead in Graduation Outcome.  4. Jamia Millia Islamia tops the Outreach and Inclusivity category.  5. IIM Bangalore ranks highest for Perception. Interestingly, no single school has dominated multiple parameters this time. Each institution strives for excellence in its own unique way. It’s important to recognize that different schools, with their diverse faculty members, have distinctive strengths shaped by their natural inclinations. Let each institution and individual choose where to excel, as long as they contribute positively to the growth of the institution and the broader ecosystem.
