As a big fan of college football and basketball, I live for game days. But it turns out, the off-the-field action is just as intense. 🏈 🏀 With the recent NCAA settlement and ongoing conference realignments, college athletics is undergoing seismic changes. For institutional leaders, here are some trends to keep top of mind as we look ahead to the future of college athletics: - Athlete Compensation: The $2.8 billion settlement opens doors to revenue-sharing. Leaders need to prepare for the financial and structural impact of sharing revenue with athletes, while staying aware of evolving legal requirements around athlete employment rights. - Conference Shifts: Power conferences like the Big 12 are reshaping, leaving non-football schools (hello, Gonzaga University !) to make tough decisions about their future--do they consider new affiliations or risk being left out of lucrative partnerships? - NIL Dynamics: Institutions must rethink athlete support as NIL policies continue to evolve, while protecting institutional integrity and compliance. Significant Changes in College Sports Governance The NCAA aggressively pursues a new governance structure that could dramatically alter the college sports landscape. Under this proposal, the Power Four conferences—Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12—would form their own governing body, leading to a significant shift in power. This move is one of the most substantial changes since the Power Five conferences gained legislative leverage following the 2014 NCAA Convention. The new structure addresses the frustrations of these power conferences, who feel their current influence is insufficient. I love this example of accountability and measurement by University of Louisville Athletics for Managers having regular 1:1 conversations. The examples of value gained by team members are outstanding! Gallup research has proven that ongoing, meaningful 1:1 conversations have a powerful impact on engagement which has a significant impact on retention and productivity. Below are the only 11 NCAA Division I universities to spend less than $10M/year on athletics. 5 of the bottom 6 in spending are HBCUs (including the one my father worked at for 30 years). Plus two others are over 70% African American. Chicago State is not an HBCU but is ~70% Black and ~5% White. Arkansas Pine Bluff is 73% Black and 22% White. I am not trying to saying spending more or less is good - just an observation from a comparative standpoint. These are the colleges who are going to be most challenged to compete in their respective leagues. If they are doing well, it would be a good qualitative study to find out why.
