Social media allows for more content and varying opinions to be expressed. The impact that social media has on journalism is along that note it also provides journalists with another resource for content and ideas. I don't feel that social media is a substitute for traditional news, I feel there is a level of standards and accountability that comes with being a journalist and should not be based on opinions or swayed by one's personal preferences. I think that social media just like wire feeds, and press releases should be used as a tool or resource as long as the facts and the content are thoroughly checked.

The future of journalism? Lessons learned from the collapse of VICE Media by Jason Koebler and his co-founders at 404 Media: 1) The founders produce the content themselves and own a quarter of the company each 2) Keep costs down by working from home and controlling expenses. 3) Monetize everywhere- They push their stories out to every available platform — posting links on X , Bluesky Threads TikTok Instagram Reels, YouTube and Mastodon 4) Registration model to collect 1st party data and to monetize via subscription in future- Readers must supply an email address to read stories online. By taking responsibility for monetising, distributing and promoting the content they create, 404 Media’s founders certainly seem more proactive than many traditional newspaper and magazine journalists, who tend to sit far away from the moneymaking and audience-building sides of their business. Yet unlike most content creators on YouTube, Instagram and elsewhere, they have a shared ideological mission that goes beyond clicks. The newsroom may be virtual but it still exists. #journalism #content #monetization #onlinenews #publishing

Journalism isn't dead; it's evolving. The pursuit of truth and the need for fact-checking will remain essential, but the platforms where people seek that information are changing. Increasingly, individuals are turning away from large media outlets and instead consuming news from independent sources. As a result, the responsibility of fact-checking has shifted from major news organizations to those who report and tell stories on smaller platforms, especially social media. Is smaller better? Ultimately, that’s for you to decide.

All of us PR pros know that journalists have it harder than ever these days. With newsrooms continuously shrinking, distrust from consumers on the rise, and an overall unfriendly media environment becoming the norm, press burnout is very real. You can check out this MediaPost article for exact facts and figures. But do your clients understand the state of the media in their particular industry? Do they know what is needed to achieve high-level coverage and have a plan to get there? When I first engage with clients, I like to have an honest discussion about this so I can create a roadmap and help them identify strategies for success. #publicrelations #pr #mediarelations

Page 3 p3 JOURNALISM TODAY The war of clicks vs truth, reality and substance The Age of Speed Over Substance The Role of Big Tech #Techgiants like #Google, #Facebook, and #Twitter / #X have become key players in the dissemination of news, but their business models do not prioritize journalistic values. These #platforms profit from engagement, not accuracy, and their #algorithms amplify content that triggers emotional responses—whether true or false. In this environment, media outlets are forced to adapt or risk becoming irrelevant. Many news organizations now rely on #socialmediatraffic for survival, further #incentivizing #sensationalism and #clickbait. Ironically, as journalism becomes more fragmented and less trustworthy, the same platforms that have undermined its authority are being asked to moderate content and prevent the spread of misinformation. This has led to questions about whether private corporations should be the arbiters of truth in society. A Way Forward? While some argue that journalism is in a state of crisis, others suggest that it is merely evolving. Many news outlets have adapted by embracing new forms of media, from podcasts to video journalism, and have carved out niches in the digital age. Subscription models, newsletters, and Patreon-supported journalists offer ways to maintain journalistic integrity without relying on advertising-driven metrics. Additionally, nonprofit investigative journalism platforms like ProPublica are gaining prominence, highlighting that serious journalism can still thrive in the digital age. However, the question remains: Can journalism regain its role as the trusted purveyor of truth, or has it been permanently relegated to just another voice in a sea of noise? While the digital revolution has empowered individuals and given rise to new forms of storytelling, it has also eroded the core values of journalism—accuracy, integrity, and public accountability. Conclusion In many ways, electronic and social media have transformed journalism beyond recognition. The ideal of journalism as an impartial, fact-based, and carefully curated pursuit has been overshadowed by the immediacy and cacophony of the internet age. While journalism is not dead, it has certainly been forced into a new and sometimes diminished role. What has emerged is a fractured media landscape, where truth competes with misinformation, and the authority of the press is more contested than ever. #electronicmedia #socialmedia #mainstreammedia #trends #truthcompetes with #misinformation,

Fact: 48% of media releases lack news value, and 68% are irrelevant to a journalist's audience. No wonder so many pitches get ignored. The key to avoiding this? Research. Journalists want stories that fit their audience and bring real news value. Before pitching, ask yourself—does this match the publication's content? Knowing their audience and creating a compelling story is what gets noticed. Want to learn how to make your pitches relevant and newsworthy?

A welcome report - social media has given everyone a platform to mouth off when they want, as loudly as they want whether that's towards sports writers or news reporters. The myth that we get handed a thick skin on day one of this job is just that - an utter myth, and I have real concerns over how the current crop of young journalists will deal with this relentless online abuse which can be mocking, sneering, patronising, grossly misogynistic, sarcastic, and wounding. We now have one Facebook ‘community’ page urging its members- all 180,000 of them - to report any journalist they see at a crash scene or incident. “Send their details here. Tired of members being leeched, harassed and robbed.” Now imagine you are a young reporter doing just that - i.e. your job - how safe do you feel? Words can have actions and consequences. People who use them recklessly and with malice or an agenda must be held to account.

Work in #DigitalPR? Consider how everyone is reading the same studies and optimizing their send times to slam a publisher's inbox (a) earlier in the week (b) early in the morning. Want to stand out? Consider doing the opposite. Muck Rack's "2024 State of Journalism Report" showed 79% of journalists report working after hours at least once a week, and 34% are doing it most days. Perhaps more people should test scheduling their pitches in the evening as a way to rise above the noise of typical working hours that journalists don't always follow.
