We must prioritize efforts to enhance health literacy and culturally competent communication for individuals. Hiring a diverse team can aid companies in creating more effective engagement strategies. Community-based organizations, as trusted messengers, require funding support to address the disparities faced by communities. #HealthLiteracy #DiversityandInclusion #CommunityEngagement

⭐Empowering Community Health Centers to Meet Primary Care Needs⭐ Community Health Centers (CHCs) are the backbone of primary care in underserved communities, and their role has never been more critical. According to the latest survey from The Commonwealth Fund, CHCs continue to expand their services, adapting to increased demands and financial pressures. Yet, challenges like staffing shortages and infrastructure needs persist. #CommunityHealth #PrimaryCare #HealthcareAccess #ActivateCare https://hubs.la/Q02KP4GH0

Reshaping the MLR to appropriately include spending on social drivers of health interventions will enable more health plans to offer these vital services and enable states to cover more interventions that address key social drivers of health. Allowing managed care organizations to focus on what really drives health — affordable and accessible housing, nutritious food, transportation, and social support networks — would go a long way in helping Americans stay healthier.
The medical loss ratio has become a barrier to preventive care

At HealthHive, PBC, we constantly think about how we can support a more connected, equitable, and accessible healthcare experience throughout life's journey. As highlighted in this article from NPR and @WYNC, which beautifully captures some of the challenges through photos, these issues are particularly pronounced in rural settings. "People tell me, ‘Take care of yourself; caregivers need a break.’ But I ask: How do we make that happen? That’s why we need respite care, especially in rural places." (https://lnkd.in/euPU5RZw?) A study published by JAMA reveals that 1 in 10 healthcare patients face significant social risk factors, including food and housing insecurities, financial strain, and lack of transportation. This research underscores the crucial role FQHCs play in providing essential care to underserved populations facing these challenges. FQHCs stand at the forefront of caring for patients affected by these social determinants, which often hinder access to healthcare. Continued education on social determinants of health is essential to understanding and addressing the daily challenges our patients face. Additionally, adequate funding ensures these clinics have the resources necessary to consistently support our communities. Through ongoing advocacy efforts, we can expand patient outreach and positively impact more lives. We deeply value and recognize the invaluable work our FQHCs are doing to enhance healthcare accessibility and create healthier communities.
A new study documents what Community Health Center staff see every day: More than 1 in 10 health center patients experience major social risk factors. This data also underscores why the work health centers do beyond the clinic walls to help patients overcome barriers -- like transportation, housing, and food insecurity -- that affect health and well-being is so important. "Our findings likely reflect the structural barriers to equity that many patients from marginalized populations continue to face," says study lead Dr. Kevin Nguyen, assistant professor of health law, policy & management at Boston University School of Public Health. The BUSPH study found high rates of food insecurity, housing insecurity, financial strain, and/or a lack of transportation among federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) patients. "Funding specifically allocated for integrating social risk screening, as well as community-informed processes for addressing unmet social needs, may help mitigate these barriers," Dr. Nguyen says. "National policies are shifting toward incentivizing the measurement of social risk factors, so identifying the payment and care delivery models that equip providers to sustainably address unmet social needs among patients who want assistance may be critical."
