My friend Jacquelyn Blake's new title (Senior Vice President of Holistic Fundraising) had me pose this question. What would holistic fundraising look like? 1 - Mission Alignment: Ensure all fundraising efforts are closely aligned with the organization's mission and values, fostering authenticity and trust. 2 - Diverse Revenue Streams: Utilize a mix of funding sources, including individual donations, grants, corporate sponsorships, and recurring giving, to build resilience. 3 - Relationship Building: Focus on cultivating long-term relationships with donors rather than just transactional interactions. Engage with them regularly and involve them in the mission. 4 - Community Engagement: Involve the community in fundraising efforts, encouraging local participation and support. This could include volunteer opportunities, partnerships with local businesses, and outreach events. 5 - Storytelling: Use compelling narratives to communicate the impact of donations, highlighting real stories from beneficiaries to connect emotionally with donors. 6 - Donor Stewardship: Implement a robust stewardship program to recognize and thank donors, keeping them informed about the impact of their contributions. 7 - Collaborative Efforts: Partner with other organizations and stakeholders to amplify impact and share resources, fostering a sense of shared mission. 8 - Data-Driven Decisions: Utilize data analytics to understand donor behavior, preferences, and trends, informing strategies and improving outreach efforts. 9 - Holistic Messaging: Ensure consistent messaging across all platforms, reinforcing the organization's vision and values in all communications. 10 - Feedback Mechanisms: Establish channels for receiving feedback from donors and the community to continuously improve fundraising strategies and address concerns. The connection between donors and the mission is crucial for fundraising campaigns. Imagine your donor, with a morning coffee in hand, sitting at the kitchen table, not just reading about your cause but becoming an active part of it. Here's how to transform your donors from passive contributors to active participants: 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐬 & 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬: Include a survey in your mailings to gather their opinions and preferences. This simple step shows donors that their input is valuable, making them feel heard and respected. 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Encourage them to sign a petition related to your cause. It’s more than just adding their name; it’s taking a stand. This shared action binds them more closely to your mission. 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 & 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: Give them the opportunity to send a personal message to someone benefiting from their support. This direct interaction creates meaningful connections, making the impact of their donation deeply personal. These strategies are more than just fundraising techniques; they are powerful engagement tools that transform the act of giving into a participatory experience. When donors are actively involved, they not only contribute more, but also become long-term advocates for your cause.

As we confront the widely documented decline in trust for institutions, civic engagement, and total households giving formally to non-profits, smart people have identified that "connection" is crucial to reverse these trends. (For readers of The Generosity Crisis, "radical connection," which I just love). But let's remember: "connection" is the result, not a thing you do as a fundraiser. So, how do you get to "connection" with supporters, donors and advocates? By engaging them in interesting, diverse and inclusive ways. That includes your content, your events, volunteering, social interactions and other things. How your donors engage can be tracked over time. With AI, you don't even need it all in a central CRM any more, you just need lists of what everyone did. (Don't get me wrong, centralized engagement data is awesome, but it's much less of a deal breaker for smaller nonprofits these days). Through the power of actually useful predictive analytics, we can detect engagement more easily and accurately, which helps us look to potential donors we can double down with, and build that crucial "connection." The nonprofits that have learned this are experiencing both incredible return on their resources, and creating a better donor experience. I'll be direct: This is probably the number one most important strategy for today's fundraisers. So, I'm bringing up this great article up again from Cole Borden that lays out some key ways to identify engagement. If you want to talk about how to do it for your cause, just drop me a line. And, as always: "keep on engaging." https://lnkd.in/dgSbagds
