Definition: Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells, tissues, and organs, perceiving them as foreign threats. This immune response can lead to inflammation, damage, and dysfunction in various parts of the body. There are many types of autoimmune diseases, each affecting different areas and systems, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes. The causes of autoimmune diseases are not fully understood, but they are believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and possibly infections. Treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms, reducing inflammation, and suppressing the immune response to improve quality of life. Encouraging Words: Your commitment and care for your spouse through the challenges of living with an autoimmune disease are truly commendable. It’s not an easy journey, but your strength, patience, and love make a world of difference. Remember, it’s okay to seek support for yourself as well; your well-being is crucial in this journey. Every act of kindness, every moment of understanding, and every ounce of support you provide is a testament to the depth of your love. Keep going—you are making a positive impact every single day. With admiration and encouragement, Donnie

Why autoimmune diseases are becoming more common in our state. All of you are familiar with the names of conditions like type I diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, IBS, MS, Guillain-Barre syndrome, demyelinating polyneuropathy and psoriasis. There are about 80 know types of autoimmune diseases. The harmful choices that we make every day in our lives, could lead to disturbances in our immune systems and metabolic pathways. Our everyday choices in life, have a bearing on our health. But what is less understood is that many times, our everyday choices can either cause or prevent several health conditions during the course of our life. Autoimmune diseases are a complex group of disorders that arise from an abnormal immune response against the body's own cells and tissues, leading to chronic inflammation and damage. The triggers for these diseases have long been a topic of intense research. Among the potential triggers, stress and uncontrolled lifestyle has emerged as a significant factor.

“Of Unknown Origin” Autoimmune diseases are considered idiopathic, “of unknown origin” and neither the cause of, nor the cure for, the disease are known. They are also becoming more frequent. In the last half-century, the rate of autoimmune disease has risen sharply in the Western world. In 2012 the American AutoImmune Related Diseases Association said “the rapid increase in autoimmune diseases clearly suggests environmental factors are at play.” (Maté. The Myth of Normal. 2022. Pg 73). To deepen the mystery further, there is a gender disparity. 70 – 80% of sufferers are women. This is an international trend. What has become increasingly clear, however, is the link between stress and the onset of the autoimmune disease. It has been observed that psychological trauma and physical trauma play an important role in the generation of autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy and other such diseases. Do you live with an autoimmune disease? When you were diagnosed, or noticed the first symptoms of the disease, were you under psychological or physical stress? Is it possible that your environment played a role in your disease surfacing when it did? For more on this topic, follow me at heidiredlcounselling.ca.

Autoimmune diseases are complex conditions that profoundly affect millions of lives worldwide. At their core, these diseases occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its cells. This can be due to various factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and hormonal imbalances. Still, their impact extends far beyond a single explanation due to the vast array of body parts they can affect. Take, for instance: Skin: Psoriasis, a well-known autoimmune disease, leads to red, itchy, and scaly skin patches, dramatically impacting a person's quality of life and self-esteem. Blood: Lupus is notorious for causing a range of symptoms, from fatigue to joint pain, showcasing the disease's systemic nature. Digestive system: Crohn's disease inflames the lining of the digestive tract, causing severe pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. These challenges deeply affect a person's ability to enjoy simple pleasures, like food, and call for empathy and understanding. Endocrine system: It is not spared either, with diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis disrupting hormone production and affecting metabolism, mood, and energy levels. Nervous system: Multiple sclerosis illustrates how autoimmune diseases can impact the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, balance issues, and even vision problems. Joints: Lastly, rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, and decreased mobility. Yet, individuals affected by this disease often display remarkable resilience, challenging themselves to maintain their daily routines. Each of these examples underscores the vast and varied ways autoimmune diseases affect lives. Their impacts go far beyond the physical symptoms, touching on emotional and social aspects. To everyone reading this: Have you or someone close to you been affected by an autoimmune disease? We encourage you to share your experiences in the comments below. How has it impacted your life or their life beyond the physical symptoms? Your stories can help others understand the diverse impact of these diseases and foster empathy within our community. #AutoimmuneDiseases #AutoimmuneAwareness #MentalWellbeing #Health

Autoimmune diseases rank as the third most common disease category, trailing only cancer and heart disease. There's a 20% likelihood of developing such a condition in one's lifetime, with females comprising four out of five cases. In 2000, autoimmune diseases ranked as the eighth leading cause of death among women under 65. The term "autoimmune disease," as defined by the nonprofit Autoimmune Association, encompasses over 100 conditions affecting up to 50 million Americans. These ailments manipulate the body's immune system, generating autoantibodies that attack healthy tissue. Symptoms of autoimmune illnesses include debilitating fatigue, chronic pain, and depression. Among the most prevalent are rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), scleroderma, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s disease), and type 1 diabetes. Living with such conditions often results in social isolation and can disrupt both career paths and family dynamics. For those that have a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes, there is amazing news. These diseases can be reversed. If you have plaques in your arteries or elevated blood sugars, your body can be put back in pre-disease status. It takes dedication and some work, but it can be done. I discovered plaques in my heart and neck arteries over 20 years ago during some routine testing. I was not surprised as my family history was full of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes. I attacked the underlying causes by eating less inflammatory foods, reducing weight significantly, exercising regularly, and taking appropriate medication to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and heal my artery linings. The results after 5 years were the elimination of plaque in my neck artery and reduction and stabilization of any plaque in my heart arteries. My blood sugars and blood pressure are like a teenagers. You can do this also. It also works for prevention and even if you've already suffered and survived a heart attack or stroke you can reverse the underlying disease and risk of another event. A good place to start is a book called "Beat the Heart Attack Gene" by Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen. Here's to your long and healthy life.

Did you know that 75%–90% of human diseases are related to the activation of the stress system? Chronic inflammation is an essential component of chronic diseases and it worses when the inflammation is accumulated over a period of time. How does stress impact the body? Physiologically, the Sympathetic Nervous System (fight of fly) and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (hormone released) in order to protect our bodies against stress. This state is beneficial to our SURVIVAL and recovery. However, when stress stimuli are exaggerated (chronically) there is an increased risk of developing other illnesses: depression, cardiovascular disorders, cancer. Link to full article: https://lnkd.in/gEYgd_NB What CAN YOU DO to regulate your nervous system? 1. Walking meditation. Begin by taking three deep breaths. Last night I hallucinated that little people were stabbing me and that I was losing my legs one at a time. Today this article came to me: “Nightmares and “daymares,” dreamlike hallucinations that appear when awake, may be little-known signs of the onset of lupus and other systemic autoimmune diseases such as rheuma toid arthritis, according to a new study published Monday” “A recent study showed that 18% of people with long-COVID have (frequent) nightmares, and this compares to a general population prevalence of about 5%,” she said. While research in the field is rather new, a March 2019 study found patients with inflammatory arthritis and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases also experienced nightmares and other REM sleep disorders such as sleep paralysis. Researchers found 3 in 5 lupus patients, and 1 in 3 patients with other rheumatology-related diseases, had increasingly vivid and distressing nightmares just before their hallucinations. These nightmares often involved falling or being attacked, trapped, or crushed or committing murder. Systemic autoimmune diseases often have a range of symptoms, called prodromes, that appear as signs of a sudden and possibly dangerous worsening of the condition. In lupus, for example, headaches, an increase in fatigue, painful, swollen joints, rashes, dizziness and a fever without an infection are well-known signs of an upcoming flare. https://lnkd.in/e99xzx6a
