With the changing of the administrations in Washington, DC and turnover in Pennsylvania, I wanted to fill a gap by creating a job board for public relations, communications, public affairs, and digital jobs for Pennsylvanians. I created a board aggregating communications jobs in Pennsylvania and remote jobs, so you can work for these jobs if you're a Pennsylvanian. Working in Public Relations A career in public relations has no defined career path. An individual can obtain a degree in a number of different fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, broadcasting, or political science. Professionals in PR must have soft skills including strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to solve problems, and the ability to think critically and creatively. A career in public relations can take many different turns. Some aspects of public relations emphasize digital media; potential careers include content creators, social media managers, or digital artists. Individuals can specialize in an industry (i.e. finance) to emphasize working between a company and its investors. Individuals interested in working for nonprofit organizations may find the branch of fundraising overlaps many aspects of public relations.

“How’d you first get into PR/ Public Affairs?” What’s great about our crazy line of work is the sheer potpourri of answers to this question. Here are some I hear frequently: “I worked / interned / volunteered on a political campaign…” “I wrote for my school newspaper / was a reporter…” “I worked on Capitol Hill or my state Capital as a press assistant / spokesperson.” “I landed internship at a big PR agency.” “I wanted/want to be a best selling fiction author but also needed a way to make rent so I got a job copywriting.” “I was working at ______(any org. without an in house PR team or agency) and they asked me to write a press release or blog because no one else would do it. I liked it.” “I was a lawyer / banker / doctor and hated it.” “I worked at a trade association after college.” “I did public affairs during my military service .” There are many paths and for some of us (🙋), it’s an eclectic and winding adventure , but that’s what makes our industry so cool and creative. And given the stakes (reputation comprises 25% of a brand’s value), we must be more open to hiring / consulting with smart folks possessing a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds.
