Really interesting paper and application of FT-ICR MS for studying wildfire impacts.
I'm very happy to share our latest paper on the chemical characterization of ultra-complex carbonaceous aerosols, presented in the Nature portfolio Communications Earth & Environment. An impressive piece of research work by my great student Eric Schneider! It has been a great collaborative work with our partners from University of Eastern Finland (University of Eastern Finland) and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Martha Liliana Chacón-Patiño). I'm looking forward to work with our partners further on this very important topic of wildland fire emissions. Enjoy the read of the open-access article here:

🏛️ Trust in institutions is positively associated with public support for phasing out natural gas, and local institutions are seen as more honest and transparent than national institutions (which are considered skilled and knowledgeable). 🏛️ These findings with implications for how regional and national government officials can gain the trust of citizens and expedite the #phaseout of #fossilfuels are from "Trusting the minister or trusting the mayor? Perceived competence and integrity of central and local Dutch institutions governing energy matters", a just published paper by Gonzalo Palomo Vélez, Goda Perlaviciute, Nadja Contzen and Linda Steg (all colleagues or EP alumni). 🏛️ The researchers assessed the extent to which #Dutch people trust local and national institutions on the basis of either their integrity or their competence. "For institutions to gain the #trust of people, and therefore, increase the acceptability of their policies, strategies should focus on strengthening what people perceive each type of institution to be lacking", the paper reads. 🏛️ Local institutions should work on perceptions of their competence, whereas national institutions should improve their transparency and provide more opportunities for public participation. 🏛️ To secure public support for phasing-out policies, Dutch institutions could prioritize (perceived) integrity-enhancing strategies, like those targeting #publicparticipation, #accountability, and #transparency. It was so great to see my academic mentor Dr. Ariaster Chimeli after 18 years of graduating from grad school. Ariaster is now one of the leading minds in #environmental and #energy #economics in Brazil. He and I published a paper back in 2009 which focused on the empirical analysis of the effects of #deregulation of the power sector in the US on the efficiency of power generation and GHG emissions: https://lnkd.in/eSQVyNgb

A recent paper has conducted a comprehensive global meta-analysis to investigate whether decommissioned structures can serve as artificial reefs (Lemasson et al., 2024). The study analyzed over 100 published papers and found that the reef effect of energy industry structures is primarily limited to enhancing fish abundance, whereas shipwrecks and purpose-built artificial reefs offer broader benefits. The study's findings are summarized in one-page by Gates & Jones which is illustrated in the figure below. https://lnkd.in/dYH5PKes

The #Degrowth Reading Group at Prescott College concluded our semester with Material World by Ed Conway -- a thought-provoking exploration of the material foundations of modern economies. As a former geologist, I had a decent grasp of the Earth's resources and their role in economic systems, but this book expanded my understanding of the intricacies of global supply chains. If you're familiar with the essay "I, Pencil," imagine that concept broadened to encompass the complexities of our globalized economy—this book is that, and more. Ed dives into the historical and contemporary significance of sand, salt, iron, copper, oil, and lithium while exploring the challenges "developed" countries face in pursuing renewable energy transitions to mitigate climate change and the aspirations of "underdeveloped" countries striving to industrialize. I've always been skeptical of the narrative surrounding a renewable energy revolution, as a transition is far from straightforward. In The Great Simplification, Nate Hagens observes that the global energy system remains additive--with renewables supplementing rather than replacing fossil fuels. Additionally, Jevons Paradox reminds us of a troubling reality: efficiency increases often lead to greater overall consumption. This paradox is now mirrored in the material realm, where the renewable energy transition demands unprecedented levels of resource extraction, extending beyond the six materials discussed in Material World and often at the expense of communities in the Global South. To navigate these challenges, I see degrowth as a necessary pathway: reducing unnecessary material and energy production/consumption in the Global North while fostering productive capacities for sustainable, self-determined development in the Global South. This approach offers a way to enhance human well-being, reduce environmental impacts, and strive for global equity. #sustainability #climatechange #ecologicaleconomics #criticalminerals #resourceeconomics #sustainabledevelopment #energy #environmentaljustice #jevonsparadox #reboundeffect #development
