With the rising number of young people not in education, employment, or training, it is more important than ever to offer new and inspiring career pathways. Many young people possess untapped creative potential, but lack the resources, self-belief, or knowledge to pursue it as a viable career. That’s where Northampton Town Council's first-ever Creative Careers Week came into play! The Creative Careers Week was designed to engage and inspire young people not in employment or education. Over the course of a week, young people explored the world of creative industries, from music to photography, guided by industry professionals. Through interactive workshops, mentoring sessions, and networking opportunities, the project aimed to make creative careers more accessible, opening a world of opportunities for young people who may have previously felt these paths were out of reach. 🗣 "Qualifications are important - but employers tell us young peoples' determination, character, tenacity, a willingness to continue to learn, reliability, problem solving and offering a completely different lens on how they see the world of work is just as valuable as qualifications - and that's what careers education is all about." It's #resultsday which means thousands of young people across #Surrey will be receiving grades for GCSEs and other qualifications they have been studying for. Thoughts then turn to what comes next - and that's where Surrey Careers Hub comes in. The Hub's Strategic Lead Georgina Angele spoke to BBC Surrey radio this morning about next best steps for young people - and how employers are looking for more than good grades when they recruit their future workforce. Speaking to James Cannon, Georgina said: "Regardless of their results, I would urge all young people to think about volunteering, after school or weekend jobs, and doing things around their interests and hobbies to get additional skills. "Employers are saying qualifications are great but they are looking for a broad range of experience - which is why they have numerous points of entry into their organisations, such as T Levels, apprenticeships and graduate programmes. "That's why we are out there working with Further Education colleges and employers to develop programmes of study that are accessible to all young people." Surrey Careers Hub is a Surrey County Council service run in partnership with national body The Careers & Enterprise Company. The team work with careers leaders in schools and employers across Surrey to promote opportunities to young people so they can take their next best step. 🔎 Find out more about the Careers Hub - https://lnkd.in/gaZEW73k 👂 Listen to the interview (from 7.10am) - https://lnkd.in/eKg83n7U 🤝 Volunteer to support the Hub's work - https://lnkd.in/espgqrTz

We’re so excited to officially announce the top five strategies identified for exploration in 2025 to help address the health care workforce shortage! We’re calling on our community to join us as we work to strengthen #NewHampshire health care through care, outreach, and support! Here are the strategies (in no particular order): ✅ In areas of low housing availability/high cost, provide a housing allowance to staff for the first year as incentive. ✅ Support the existing system to provide health care career outreach to teenagers in high school through the development of internships, shadow days, career fairs, etc. Engage parents in health care career outreach to teenagers to provide education, guidance, and support. ✅ Build alliances between community college programs and 4-year programs (public and private) to allow credits to fully transfer in all fields. ✅ Conduct a rapid regional comparison study of NH health care workforce compensation to inform alignment of compensation levels with neighboring states. ✅ Engage private and public payer markets to expand payment to cover essential services such as case management and community health workers. We’re forming volunteer exploratory workgroups for each strategy to start meeting in 2025, and we’d love to have you join us! Visit https://lnkd.in/gAFkMCyv to learn more, sign up, and support our #NHHealthCare community!

“Our jobs require specialized education and training so it’s made recruiting minorities more difficult.” These are sentiments I’ve seen while reviewing several State agency, boards, or commissions DEI Action plans to which I’ve usually replied, I think you should expand your vision. Think bigger. If we are to solve some of the equity challenges across our communities we have exceeding the intentionality that went into creating the problems. Here in Oregon we are far from the demographics of this nation but if we look nationally, 53% of college graduates were white, that means that specialized education line of thought is just your convenient excuse. Have you considered expanding your applicant pool by partnering with any of the hundreds of minority serving institutions to advertise or maybe develop practicums, internships, or formalized partnerships with college advisors specific to your specialty?! *crickets* It’s beyond frustrating to see people not really even really trying to bridge gaps yet they’ll pat one another on the back and say good job, and talk about how difficult DEI work is. Witnessing the lack of urgency and lack of sincerity that goes into some people’s DEI efforts, as a poor Black kid from Northeast Portland, with a long list of friends and family who’ve lived their entire lives struggling to carve out opportunities for themselves in the rat race of failed promises in #liberal #inclusive #Portland… it’s enraging. Either quit pretending to care or get better. There’s nothing but opportunity to improve and that should come with a great sense of urgency… as if it’s your family involved in the generational cycles of suffering we see in PDX. The hypocrisy and performative wokeness in the #PNW is causing harm and I don’t really have an appetite for it. . . . . . #Oregon #DEI #Leadership #Government #Education #Degree #College #MSI #HBCU #careers #diversity #excuses #UofO #OSU #WOU #PSU #Woke

Today marks the start of Discover Creative Careers Week 2024, an industry-led initiative designed to provide young people from England with encounters and experiences of the creative industries through in-school, workplace and online opportunities. Throughout the week of Monday 18 - Friday 22 November, events will take place across the country to encourage young people to engage with creative industries and help connect organisations with new audiences. It represents an opportunity for employers to directly engage and inspire young people, breaking down barriers to employment opportunities that they may have previously felt were out of reach. The week offers both in person and virtual opportunities for young people to meet employers across all sub-sectors of the creative industries. Discover! Creative Careers, an England wide industry-led programme, is using the week urging employers in the creative industries to step up their time investment in the workforce, as a growing skills gap threatens to hinder the sector's ability to thrive. Recent findings from Skills England's first report reveal an alarming shortage of skilled professionals across various creative fields, from digital content production to performing arts. As the government’s newly announced Industrial Strategy positions the creative industries as one of the seven key sectors of national focus, now is the time for employers to take decisive action to safeguard the future of this vital industry. With the creative industries generating £126 billion in gross value added to the UK economy annually, the sector is a powerhouse of growth, innovation, and global influence. However, this contribution is at risk if the skills shortage is not addressed as a matter of urgency. Crucially, the Skills England report highlighted that there are significant regional disparities in skills availability within the sector, with fewer opportunities and greater recruitment challenges outside of London. That's why ScreenSkills, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Arts Council England and a steering group of almost 30 industry partners have collaborated to deliver the Discover! Creative Careers programme. This initiative provides secondary school and college students aged 11-18 across England with greater access to creative industries, showcasing the diverse career pathways available to them, especially in regions where opportunities are less visible. In the Autumn Budget, the Government announced it was expanding the programme, increasing funding to £3 million, to connect even more young people to employers in the creative industries.
