The Dosta Tec team was in Pontevedra, Galicia, last week. Every now and then, it’s important to get out in the field and review existing solutions, moving away from projects and building energy models – just for a moment. Winter gardens are widespread in the region, due to the intensity of rain, especially in winter. In Pontevedra, there isn’t a single block without at least one. A few examples: 1) The Old: wooden-framed and probably over 100 years old, located on “Praza da Leña”. 2) The New: a tight, PVC-framed version on a newer building, most likely with better thermal resistance. 3) The Adapted: a retrofitted version. An interesting view of 2 different installations (top 2 floors), alongside non-retrofitted balconies. At some point in the building’s life, the individual owners decided it was time to build their winter garden. Apart from shielding the space from the rain and cold, winter gardens create a controllable “thermal buffer” which helps keep the heat inside the apartment. One solution, 3 different approaches. #vernacular #passivearchitecture #buildingefficiency #nzeb

"The first #carbonpositive #hotel in the United States, which opens in downtown #Denver this summer, Populus takes #sustainable #travel to the next level: In addition to using #lowcarbon #concrete mixes, high-recycled materials, and more during construction, the hotel is #offsetting its long-term #carbonfootprint by planting #trees across Gunnison County, Colorado. Already, more than 70,000 Engelmann Spruce trees, a plant native to the area that has been threatened by beetles, have been planted. Together, the trees will #sequester more carbon than the building can emit in its life. Guests can even visit the newly planted forest themselves, just put the coordinates 38°03'59.4 "N 106°55'24.6 "W in a GPS. But what might be most striking about the new-build hotel is the facade, which was inspired by Colorado’s famous Aspen trees. Designed by Studio Gang, the same firm that brought you the wavy Aqua Tower in Chicago and the twisting MIRA tower in San Francisco, the white exterior of the hotel is covered in what appear to be porous openings, but are actually just windows. The hotel’s distinctive windows pull double duty: They are meant to mirror the characteristic patterns of Aspen trees, while offering #shade and boosting #efficiency..." https://lnkd.in/gmt8ARXK

Almost a week away! Look out for our @perthgardenfestival show garden titled "The Four Corners of The Earth". Find out more at https://lnkd.in/gMM-prY5 Here is our Modern Minimalist Garden. Practical in your Patio With Perth expanding rapidly and suburbs being built, a lot of modern house packages have smaller outdoor spaces to maximize the house area. Maintenance can be a genuine hassle for busy homeowners, professionals, or even investment property owners and this could mean that a “Less is More” minimalist garden could be the best option. Maximizing your hardscaping for hosting backyard dinners with just enough softscaping for interest could be the thing for you and the best value for money in the long run. If you feel inspired by this year’s PGOLF but know that any plants you get might not make it due to your busy schedule then this may well be the ticket. Think Total Cost of Ownership and CAPEX vs OPEX. Got that? Then this is probably for you. Architectural plants like cordylines and lomandras are waterwise, hardy, but modern and classy. Less said, more done: a garden you can forget about but which will always be there ready for you to utilize and enjoy.

In Quân 11 of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, tucked in the dense urban fabric of the city, a residence utilizes natural air flow and lush vegetation to regulate temperature. To accomplish this, the architects placed a green wall of sorts on the outer edges of the compact site, creating what they refer to as a ‘green coat’ that filters the sunlight. After passing through this outer barrier, the facade of the residence is adorned in a brick with breeze block perforations throughout. This facade wall absorbs further heat from the direct sunlight and allows for the movement of natural air through them and through the home. Strategically placed windows and doors help direct air flow, reducing the need for manufactured air systems. A rooftop garden and green space add an extra layer of insulation for the home. The gardens also provide a space for the residents to immerse themselves in the natural environment. Designed to make the inhabitants always see greenery, every floor of the residence boasts scattered gardens. The home is a phenomenal example of sustainable urban development that works to create green space within our dense cities. The green spaces in this home alone, provide a microclimate and helps boost biodiversity in the area.
