DotHouse proudly celebrates Black History Month (BHM)! BHM is every February and celebrates the achievements and history of African Americans. BHM was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. The 2024 theme centralizes on "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. Social justice has historically developed visual and literary arts to capture the spirit and platforms of resistance, and to disseminate those messages to audiences outside of mainstream methods. African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. We encourage everyone to learn more about BHM by engaging in events throughout our communities. Link: https://nmaahc.si.edu/ #BlackHistoryMonth

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is crucial to reflect not only on the achievements and resilience of the Black community but also on the historical injustices that have shaped the United States and Maine. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for land acknowledgments, recognizing the Indigenous peoples on whose land we stand. It is equally important to extend these acknowledgments to encompass the labor that built this nation, often extracted from enslaved African people. On the first day of Black History Month, 2024, we are exploring the significance of including labor acknowledgments alongside land acknowledgments and sharing some best practices to ensure a respectful and inclusive approach. https://lnkd.in/epnnkUE3

We asked our employees what Black History Month means to them and how this year's theme of African Americans and the Arts, resonates with them. Listen to their stories: Often our voices go unheard, ignored, and even taken for granted. Black History Month provides a platform to educate people about the often-overlooked achievements, struggles, and experiences of Black people throughout history. It helps fill gaps in historical knowledge and promotes a more inclusive understanding of the past. The arts have often been a powerful means of conveying social and political messages. African American artists have used their work to address issues of race, identity, discrimination, and social justice. This theme underscores the role of the arts in advocating for change and raising awareness of important societal issues. Art can be powerful, it can be bold, it can be loud, it can be fierce, and it can be whatever we want it to be! Art is you; art is me; art is US! Tekoya Boykins, Academic Services & Products

Whilst we celebrate and use philosophically rich texts by black authors throughout the year as a stimulus for enquiry, during this month we will highlight authors and their stories which may expand your repertoire. This year’s Black History Month theme is Reclaiming Narratives and according to the BHM UK Magazine it ‘marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By emphasising this theme, we shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore our commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage.’ One of these stories that must be told belongs to Henrietta Lacks. We have added a free resource on P4C.com entitled ‘Henrietta Lacks and medical sampling’ which you can find here: https://buff.ly/4eIHvKb This resource is one of a series developed as part of the SAPERE Thinking Together in Science and RE Project. The three year project was funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation as part of Big Questions in Classrooms (BQiC).

This year’s Black History Month theme, "Reclaiming Narratives," marks a crucial step in recognising and addressing the representation of Black history and culture. This theme highlights the importance of correcting historical inaccuracies, celebrating untold success stories, and embracing the full richness of Black heritage. It's about reclaiming our stories, honouring our heroes, and challenging the narratives that have frequently overlooked the contributions and achievements of Black individuals in the UK and worldwide. #ReclaimingNarratives

Why the Theme for Black History Month 2024 is important. "Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression." The intention of providing different themes is to bring attention to important efforts, impact, and contributions that reflect how African Americans "have viewed themselves, the influence of social movements, and the aspirations of the Black community." Honoring the past, remembering the efforts, celebrating the contributions, acknowledging the lives, and embracing the future that embodies Black History. ❤ #blackhistorymonth #bhm #culture #inspiration #influence #motivation For More Information: https://lnkd.in/gkTHyYy

Black History Month celebrates the rich history and contributions of Black people worldwide. This year's theme is #ReclaimingNarratives, by challenging dominant historical narratives that often misrepresent Black experiences. By reclaiming narratives we can empower Black individuals and communities, promoting inclusivity, and challenging harmful stereotypes. Here are a few ways we can reclaim narratives today: - Support Black-owned businesses and creators to amplify their voices. - Educate yourself on Black history beyond well-known figures to better understand Black experiences. - Amplify Black voices by sharing their stories and engage in conversations about race. This month at Fuse, we raised awareness internally by sharing contributions of historical and modern figures who have and continue to reclaim narratives. If you’d like to explore more, here are two great resources by Black authors who share their stories authentically: 📚 Living While Black by Guilaine Kinouani. 📚 Black and British: A Forgotten History by David Olusoga. This Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the efforts made and work towards a more equitable future for all. #LearnBlackHistory #ChallengeStereotypes #BlackHistoryMonth
