Daily Dollop of Wallop #81 This past week has been the most reassuringly intense week of talking. Talking to people in hospitality, and the wine trade specifically, about the challenges that face them and in equal measures and with equal amounts of energy and optimism, the positive reactions to the challenges. Literally, within the past 7 days I have spoken with winemakers (both abroad and on our shores), owners of small indie outlets, owners of larger groups, directors of some key wine importers, the CEO of a very big L+D development company and a very well known Canadian-American athletic apparel company (there is a link to wine here I assure you!). The reason why I mention this, is simply because wine has an effect and an affect on how all of the people I spoke to take their next decisions. Decisions that could influence their trajectory and downfall. Decisions that could alter the perception of wine for their staff. Decisions that could ultimately, change the face of their business. The crux of the conversations that I had was based around how we bring wine - and I do mean every wine from the old, the new, the no and lo, the cheap and cheerful, the ludicrously expensive, the canned, the boxed, the bottled and the taps. All of it, lock stock - how do we bring it to the attention of everyone both from a commercial perspective and a, please forgive the phrase, end user perspective. You know what to most common grounds of agreement we all had? yes, you guessed it (perhaps not)... ...story telling. Those of us in the trade know this. We really do but a lot of us sit in the shadows waiting for someone else to start something before joining in. Who out there has the judicious wisdom, people power, network and just outright gumption and tenacity to take this thing to the next level? Those outside of the trade also know this. The general public that enjoy wine don't want to be sold to, they want to be 'storytold' to. They want to be spoken with and not spoken to, engaged and not deterred. I completely realise that this will be read as 'just another statement' without action. Totally get it. It easy to write this stuff, post it and let that be that. I mentioned this on Instagram last week and the week before and at least twice here trying to establish likeminded views from industry leaders, tastemakers, thinkers and action takers to come together to form a collective for change. It's bloody difficult innit. Leverage your beverage.

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕ Yesterday I had the pleasure of moderating a fireside (cafe side?) chat for Breville | Sage with our friends at Mecca Coffee to discuss the speciality coffee industry and it got me thinking about two questions. 1) Is filter or espresso the better method to showcase speciality coffee, and 2) Is the role of a panel moderator to a) synthesize information, b) help panel members clarify and express their thoughts, c) integrate any sponsor/brand messaging or d) stir the pot? Spill the beans, espresso yourself! For me, it's 1) filter, and 2) b then a, with maybe a cheeky dash of d 🕺
