My Detroit Tigers are on an improbable playoff run with a comically small payroll of less than $20M...for the entire team! For context, a single MLB superstar typically makes double that. If you haven’t tuned in yet (or don’t care to - I get it, baseball can still be slow), this story is compelling for two reasons: 1. A young, relatively unknown team that’s peaking at just the right time. 2. Manager AJ Hinch is a mastermind, using creative, analytics-driven strategies to put his players in the best possible situations to succeed. His approach is bound to influence how the game is played in the future. These Tigers represent the best of Detroit: making the absolute most of what you’ve got. Plus, analytics help. Prime number: $18 million contenders The true MCU (Moneyball Cinematic Universe) might finally get a sequel. The Detroit Tigers, an MLB team made up of players who sound like they were cut from the Backyard Baseball video game (e.g., Dillon Dingler), are in the midst of a generationally improbable playoff run. Their entire payroll is just $18.4 million, less than the individual salaries of 21 different players still playing in this year’s playoffs, the Wall Street Journal reported. That’s also less than half of what New York Yankees star Aaron Judge makes on his own. In a strategy many companies can probably learn from, the Tigers elected to count on their promising young players and develop internal talent rather than spend big on known commodities. The results have been stunning: In August, they were seven games below .500 and had a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs. Now, they’re a handful of victories away from the World Series. It’s a genuine rags-to-riches story that demands a Hollywood adaptation starring Austin Butler as Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris. https://lnkd.in/gU4Mh3UG

Did you know the average PROFESSIONAL baseball player only gets a hit 28% of the time they step to the plate? Yet they’re still the best of the best, as a professional who made it to The Big Leagues. Did you know that Jordan missed 9,000 shots, lost almost 300 games, and missed the game-winning shot 26 times in his career? Yet he’s still considered one of, if not the, greatest players of all time. He also made 12,192 shots, won 706 games, and made 28 game winning shots. The best of the best basketball player ever (arguably!) had a ~60% success rate. And you’re out here scared that one little article isn’t performing like you thought it would. Ship more. Get more reps. Miss those game winning shots. Because if you do it enough, you’ll get better and you’ll make more of the shots you take. And that’s all that matters. Consistent improvement over a long time. That’s how you win.
