Better IOL technology allow us to be more confident in offering lens based surgery earlier in life than we did in the past. This, combined with the LASIK population being more affected by inflation, and the IOL population ‘needing’ the procedure and having more disposable income…are the primary reasons why we’ve seen this shift. We used to do LASIK more often in those ‘tweeners’….those that don’t yet have visuallly significant cataracts and are in the presbyopia age….because the IOL technology caused a decline in quality of vision. Now, that has shifted, thus a further decline in LASIK and increase in IOLs. We also have great diagnostics that can identify lens changes, like the iTrace, that can push our decisions towards IOLs.
