Yesterday, yet another frustrated business owner told me that despite his investment in new technology, resistance among employees to step out of their comfort zone and embrace new systems is holding his business back. 🤔 How can you ensure your learners will remember what you’ve taught? One method is thanks to the "forgetting curve" proposed in 1885 by Hermann Ebbinghaus. ➡️ This curve shows that we forget an average of 50% of memorized information in just 2 days. And the more insignificant the knowledge seems to the learner, the faster it will be forgotten. So how can we avoid forgetting? 👉 By repeating and consolidating learning! 💡 We retain recently learned information better when it has been taught repeatedly over a given period of time. In practical terms, the method to combat "the forgetting curve" is the following: 🔵 A first time within 10 minutes of learning. 🔵 A second time 1 day later 🔵 A third time 7 days later 🔵 A fourth time 30 days later 🔵 A fifth time 180 days later This repetition method helps us commit around 80% of the content to memory after 6 months, whereas under normal circumstances less than 20% would have been retained. 💡 To find out more, take a look at our video on spaced repetition: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eHNFm24r What about you? DEEP MARKING‼️ When my then Director of Studies… a well respected beacon of wisdom and guidance, Dr Olayinka Oduwole, introduced deep marking to us, we thought we were unnecessarily being over burdened and we whined😁. NB: Dr. Oduwole is a leader I respect and regard highly because he taught me most of the skills that has helped me stand out as a 21st century educator today.🙏 One oustanding thing I loved about Dr. Oduwole was that he would tell you what you need to do and show you how to do it. He would always give you a live demo for EVERY training he engaged us in. He practically led by example💯 Today, I can’t even do without deep marking and my learners have come to love it… cause not only do I deep mark every single piece of their work, I also teach them how to respond to the comments. It’s usually very interesting to read.😁 It helps facilitate progress. Learners know exactly what they did right and what they need to work on! That said… Deep mark is continuous marking. Marking is a complete waste of time if it has no impact. Therefore marking should be seen as a tool for ‘intervention’. BELOW ARE A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO USE MARKING TO INTERVENE: 1. Marking to challenge a student 2. Marking to consolidate learning 3. Marking to accelerate learning 4. Marking to support learners. Charity Chukwugbo April2024.
