It was a real pleasure to be working on a marine project again, albeit with troubling findings. Very excited to see what comes of this work as we go into #COP16 and a critical time for #OceanConservation. It's time for action. 🚨 We Are Failing Our Oceans: Only 2.8% of Marine Protected Areas Are "Effectively" Protected 🚨 Nations have committed to protecting 30% of the planet’s oceans by 2030, as part of the 30x30 goal, a cornerstone of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), but our latest report reveals a troubling truth: Only 8.3% of global marine areas are under protection and just 2.8% are "effectively" protected. This new report, launched today and authored by Metabolic, commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative, and produced with the Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, highlights the urgency. The 30x30 goal is historic, but we are falling short. More importantly, protection must be meaningful, stopping harmful practices like industrial fishing, bottom trawling, and oil and gas development. The report will be presented at COP16 in Cali, Colombia on October 28th in the For Coral pavilion. It is also essential to preserving the ocean’s ability to act as our greatest climate ally by absorbing billions of tonnes of carbon emissions every year.” The 30x30 goal is historic, but we are falling short. 🌊 Our report is live! 📢 "On Track or Off Course? Assessing Progress Toward the 30x30 Target for Ocean Conservation" launched today! This research has been an eye-opening - and sobering - journey, revealing just how far we still are from safeguarding our ocean, which is vital for the health of the planet 🌍🐋🦀🦈🐠 With #COP16 just around the corner, let’s put the spotlight on ocean conservation and urge countries to step up, set ambitious targets, and turn promises into action. Let’s get back on course!🚀 Nations have committed to protecting 30% of the planet’s ocean by 2030, as part of the 30x30 goal, a cornerstone of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), but our latest report reveals a troubling truth: 🚨Only 8.3% of global marine areas are under protection and just 2.8% are "effectively" protected🚨 This new report, launched today and authored by Metabolic, commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative, and produced with the Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, highlights the urgency. We are in the final quarter of 2024 and the stakes for upcoming biodiversity and climate talks are rising. While Australia hosts the first Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney this week, hurricane Milton barrels into Florida - the intensity of such storms exacerbated by climate change triggering rising sea surface temperatures and a warmer atmospheres which carries more water. And the Joint WWF and Zoological Society of London (ZSL) #LivingPlanet report today outlines new stats about the status of biodiversity - freshwater species populations have now crashed by 85% on average since I was born in 1970. Next week, in Cali, Colombia, the latest round of global biodiversity will begin. Having agreed the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework in Montreal two years ago including its 4 goals and 23 targets to reverse the loss of biodiversity and put nature on the path to recovery, just 20 countries have updated their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans to reflect this new ambition. What’s more, the commitments to mobilise new resources ($20 billion was promised from developed nations by 2025) remain inadequate as reported by Campaign for Nature. When parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meet in Baku, Azerbaijan in November, once again they will have to face up to the inadequacy of existing commitments and plans. Climate Action Tracker states “Current policies presently in place around the world are projected to result in about 2.7°C warming above pre-industrial levels. NDCs alone will limit warming to 2.5°C. When binding long-term or net-zero targets are included warming would be limited to about 2.1°C above pre-industrial levels.” The challenge is daunting. But, the BirdLife International community continues to inspire greater action by both businesses and governments through both its science and practical conservation. For example: - This week the Nature Positive Initiative – of which BirdLife International is a core partner - has launched an open consultation on State of Nature Metrics which will help businesses and government measure progress on the path to halting and reversing biodiversity declines – see here: https://lnkd.in/eKG-ejMm - Having campaigned hard for the EU Nature Restoration Law (the world’s first), we’ve produced a practical guide for the 27 Member States to guide implementation - see here: https://lnkd.in/eNZnTxyS - BirdLife Partners will unite to use our voice for nature to influence talks in Sydney, Cali and Baku bolstered we by messages of hope from people from all round the world. You can add your own voice here: https://lnkd.in/evvY_JNs Yes, the challenge remains daunting but we remain driven by hope and optimism. And that's how we'll end the nature and climate emergency.

🚨 The 30x30 target for the ocean needs stronger action 🚨 With less than six years left to protect 30% of the world's oceans, time is running out. Our latest report commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative, and produced with the Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, reveals that only 8.3% of global marine areas are under protection, and just 2.8% are effectively protected. Nations must urgently step up their marine conservation efforts if we are to stop biodiversity loss and safeguard the oceans that provide food, livelihoods, and climate regulation. The report shows that protection must go beyond designations to stop harmful practices like industrial fishing and oil extraction. We will discuss these findings further in Cali, Colombia, at COP16. From Cali to Belem: United Nations conventions must fight the #climatecrisis and the biodiversity crisis with united efforts, says WCS's Daniel Zarin. Addressing both requires rapid acceleration in the transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy and unprecedented investment in the protection and strengthening of the Earth’s natural buffers against the impacts of the climate crisis—our forests, peatlands, grasslands and marine ecosystems. "That investment must include support for Indigenous Peoples and other communities whose stewardship underpins the ecological integrity of nature." 📣 Hot off the press. Greenpeace International warns that at the current rate of progress, the 30×30 ocean target, agreed by all governments at the previous biodiversity COP15, won’t be achieved at sea until 2107! 💡 Main findings from the report "From commitment to Action" released today include: 👉 The equivalent of 23.5 MPAs, each the size of metropolitan France, will have to be established every year between now and the end of 2030 to reach 30% in the six years that remain. 👉 Without high seas MPAs 83% of all national waters would need to be protected to hit the 30×30 goal. 👉 2.7% of the global ocean is currently fully or highly protected from human activities, and the figure is just 0.9% for areas of the high seas, which are beyond national jurisdiction. A big wave, a tangible scale-up of marine conservation actions are urgently needed! 🌊 #NatureIsAlsoBlue #SDG14 MedPAN Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Centre UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention Union for the Mediterranean PLATEFORME OCEAN ET CLIMAT

From Pledges to Protection: MCI Leads the Charge for Our Oceans Released just before COP16, the "On Track or Off Course?" report drove urgent discussions and widespread media coverage at the summit. Commissioned by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Fund and developed with Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, the report highlights the need to shift from symbolic pledges to real action in ocean protection. The findings—only 2.8% of the world’s oceans effectively protected and 8.3% designated for protection—reveal a significant gap between commitments and actual safeguards. Based on Marine Conservation Institute’s research and published in Conservation Letters, the analysis led by Beth Pike, Director of the Marine Protection Atlas, sets a benchmark for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and stresses the need for meaningful, quality protection. Beth Pike’s words capture the urgency of the findings: “Less than 3% of marine areas are truly protected. The gap between promise and action is huge. We need real change now, not just words on paper.” These are some of the news articles that mention MCI research: • NPR: https://lnkd.in/gvwwXFGB • The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/g-d_bd-M • Down to Earth: https://lnkd.in/gizZJ2en • France24: https://lnkd.in/gfrbdc3m • Yahoo News: https://lnkd.in/gyw_tgfT As we reflect on COP16, it’s clear that Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework isn’t just about protecting more ocean—it’s about protecting it well. Marine Conservation Institute is advancing this vision by setting standards for MPAs that fulfill its essential requirements: • Effective management • Equitable governance • Inclusiveness • Conservation outcomes Instead of a rush to expand protected areas, we must ensure the most critical areas for nature receive lasting, impactful protection. #30x30 #OceanConservation #MarineProtectedAreas #COP16 #BiodiversityProtection
