As biodegradable plastics are a very small percentage of plastics overall, the expense of separate collection, sorting, and treatment for such small volumes is often unjustifiable 💸. In sorting plants, infra-red readers are needed, and their cost is prohibitive 💰 for amounts of bioplastics that may only constitute around 1 or 2% of the total plastics they sort. 🔍 The PROSPER project will therefore look at how we can overcome this stumbling block, such as aggregating collections to achieve larger volumes for sorting or introducing new technologies, like AI, to make the sorting process less costly.
