Switching from pinch valves to Slurryflo control valves has improved production uptime and reduced failures in one of Australia's top iron ore producers' WHIMS process. Slurryflo control valves are specifically designed for handling abrasive slurries, making them more durable and reliable in such applications compared to any other valve. Their robust construction and advanced sealing mechanisms help minimize the risk of valve failure, ensuring smoother operation of the WHIMS process and reducing downtime and maintenance costs. During a 17-month trial, the average pinch valve failure was 6 weeks, while the same Slurryflo valve was in continuous operation with very little wear. UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS - HOW COPPER IS PRODUCED Copper processing is a multifaceted process that begins with the mining of copper ore, which contains less than 1% copper, and culminates in the production of 99.99% pure copper sheets known as cathodes. These cathodes are ultimately transformed into products for everyday use. The two primary types of copper ore, copper oxide and copper sulfide, undergo distinct processes—hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, respectively—due to their differing chemical properties. 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗿𝗲 🏭 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀: More abundant near the surface, these ores are considered low-grade due to their lower copper concentration. Despite requiring more ore to be extracted and processed, the lower cost of processing makes mining copper oxides profitable. 🏭 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀: Less abundant but containing higher amounts of copper, these ores are more costly to process. However, they yield more copper, making the higher processing costs worthwhile. 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 The initial steps of copper processing are identical for both types of ore: 🚧 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Typically performed using open-pit mining, where a series of stepped benches are dug deeper into the earth over time. Boring machinery drills holes into the hard rock, and explosives are used to blast and break the rock. 🚧 𝗛𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: The resulting boulders are transported using specialized haul trucks, conveyors, trains, and shuttle cars from the blasting site to the processing site. 🚧 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Most ores are sent through a primary crusher, reducing the size of the ore from boulders to golf ball-sized rocks.
