The #Franco-#German arms manufacturer Nexter (company of KNDS) (KMW+Nexter Defense Systems) will set up a subsidiary in #Ukraine. French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced this on Twitter (X). The enterprise will manufacture ammunition and repair equipment. This decision was agreed during talks between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu in Berlin on Friday, March 22. “Co-production in Ukraine: KNDS will set up a subsidiary that will best meet the needs of the Ukrainian army,” the statement reads. The French Minister noted that the KNDS plant would produce ammunition and spare parts for the maintenance of German and French armored vehicles and weapons’ systems already in service with the Ukrainian Defense Forces. “We, France and Germany, both want to help Ukraine to make the ammunition production there more self-sufficient,” #Pistorius said. Later, the subsidiary will also be able to produce full-fledged systems from scratch at its facilities. The French BFMTV clarified that the establishment of the KNDS enterprise in Ukraine was mainly intended to ensure prompt repair of military equipment already delivered by France and Germany. This includes spare parts for the French #Caesar wheeled self-propelled howitzers and #AMX10RC armored fighting vehicles. As well as German #Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers and Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The idea is to first prioritize the production in Ukraine of parts that break down frequently, and thus “simplify logistical issues” during the repair and maintenance of the relevant equipment and speed up its return to the battlefield. As previously reported, France is planning to have some of its arms manufacturers producing military equipment on Ukrainian soil. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) awarded a multinational framework contract to RTX for Laser Guidance kits. This capability will enhance the precision and effectiveness of air missions across the Alliance. The contract was awarded through the Ammunition Support Partnership, established in 1993 and comprising of 28 member nations. The partnership facilitates the collective procurement and management of ammunition, ensuring member nations can invest in advanced weapon systems and expand their munitions inventories. By aggregating requirements through multinational contracts, NSPA offers turnkey solutions that enable member nations to get access to the resources they need to maintain readiness and operational effectiveness. Multiple Ammunition Support Partnership member nations leverage this mechanism to procure Precision Guided Munitions (PGMs) to invest in new weapon systems and build up inventory. Herem told ERR. "This is essentially what is happening in Ukraine today. The front line is one thing, but launching things deep is quite another. And in order to prevent that, whether that's after a conflict has already broken out or, if for example, it is to show Russia today that if they're going to do this, we're going to shoot back, then you need a certain amount of a certain type of ammunition. Because the equipment to fly these things, we have either already acquired or will essentially acquire in the next year and a half," Gen. Herem said. "That's all been funded (launchers - ed.). The question is the ammunition. And it's very indirectly linked to NATO's plans, whether that's a ten-year capability development or these defense plans. We may have troops here, but what is the situation if they come in from the other side of the Narva River? Are we just going to wait a little while until they come to us and then take their tanks apart with spanners and wrenches or are we going to have the capacity to fire back?" he added. Gen. Herem said that in the two and a half years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, began many countries have not moved particularly quickly to replenish their stocks. "We are talking about certain anti-aircraft weapons, for which certain NATO countries have got together and started to procure. But in terms of the bigger picture, as far as I know, there has been no specific procurement of ammunition," Gen. Herem said. "In this respect, we should not rely too much on our allies. And if we are to rely on our allies, then we would go to the Americans, British or Italians specifically and say, you see, we are about a billion short, buy us this ammunition. That's out of the question," Gen. Herem continued. The State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Defence, Dr Damir Črnčec, and the National Armaments Director at the Ministry of Defence of the French Republic, General Gaël Diaz de Tuesta, have signed a Letter of Intent on the European joint procurement of Caesar self-propelled Howitzer (SPH) and Mistral man-portable air-defense Systems (MANPADS). The Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and the Government of the French Republic on defense cooperation also provides for cooperation in the field of design, implementation and procurement of armaments. The signing of the Letter of Intent will facilitate further discussions on the potential procurement of Caesar and Mistral from French manufacturers. The possible acquisition of these weapon systems will be carried out under the same conditions as for all the other countries that have already or will join this initiative, with the signature of the Letter of Intent. The signing of the Letter of Intent will initiate all the necessary procedures at the Ministry of Defence for the eventual procurement and introduction of entirely new weapon systems into the Slovenian Armed Forces. Yesterday’s announcement by the Pentagon to deploy a THAAD battery to Israel, along with ~100 U.S. Soldiers, gives Israel an additional layer to its current air defense capabilities. Combined with Iron Dome, Arrow, David’s Sling, and PATRIOT, the addition of THAAD will now provide Israel with an extensive set of systems that offer multiple ranges and enable a layered defense to intercept incoming targets. This should be concerning and a wake up call for the Department of Defense and Congress. The ADM in charge of the entire IndoPacific Region, ADM Paparo, is concerned about weapons stockpiles. Especially concerning are missiles and air defense capabilities. What are the plans to replenish these needed armaments for ADM Paparo? Or should the question be, are there any plans to replenish them? All Operational Commanders, Budgeting and Fiscal decision makers should be listening and preparing to strengthen US Military resources. A German PATRIOT missile firing unit deployed to Finland to integrate with a Finnish brigade during exercise Mallet Strike 24-1 and train tactics, techniques and procedures and Command and Control structures. The German 120-strong PATRIOT unit will be fully integrated into exercise Mallet Strike working with up to 1700 participants from the Finnish Defence Forces. Embedded in the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System via the Finnish Control and Reporting Centre, the German unit will contribute to the Recognised Air Picture, practice engagement operations against drones and aircraft acting inside joint combined Missile Engagement Zone. The collaboration of Finnish and German GBAD demonstrates NATO’s cohesion and capabilities and underscores of Allied forces are integrated by design.
