So great to see this analysis feature in the Principal's comment in Wellington High School's newsletter on Friday. (Brilliant timing - just as the Te Whakarōputanga Kaitiaki Kura o Aotearoa - New Zealand School Boards Association conference was getting underway, so thanks Dom!) As well as achieving at a higher level than other students, students who are involved with at least one sport, cultural activity or club, have a significantly higher average rate of attendance than other students. If you are on a secondary school board, please consider tracking the extra-curricular participation of students in your school and prioritising actions to increase involvement for all. Belonging and movement are two powerful tools as we look to lift attendance, engagement and achievement.

🚩 Misrepresented ... Again 🧩 It was (yet again) disappointing to hear the WA Education Minister make negative statements about University In-School Enabling Programs. "The whole issue of uni preparation courses and whether they do prepare students for university … it's hard to actually know, because it's hard to get the data from university on the success rate for non-ATAR routes to university" (Source ABC News, 24/11/24). This statement was made in one of several media responses about The Pathways for Post-School Success Report (Published 11/11/24). Yet this data was provided as part of submissions during consultation stages plus during round table meetings - certainly for ECU UniPrep Schools and UniPrep. It is really proving hard to turn the narrative of the Minister. But next week I'm looking forward to co-presenting a small piece about bridging knowledge of #GenAI between Year 12 and First-Year Uni through In-School Enabling Programs alongside Helen Rogers (UNDA) and Kelly Nowak (Curtin) with contributions by Rebekah Sturniolo-Baker (Murdoch). The type of collaboration that stems from already sharing. Co-authored with Sharron King, this has just been published in open-access JANZSSA. For all those interested in regional students' transitions to university, this paper looks at the difference in experiences for students in less populated states, where universities are centralised in capital cities, often vast distances from regional/remote students' homes and communities; compared with those in more populated states with a strong regional university presence. https://lnkd.in/gbVimyUk

What struck me the most was their focus on sustainability and the use of AI tools not just for academic projects but to forge real-world businesses aimed at global markets. 💡 Big Dreams in the Making One of their goals? To build businesses worth over a million dollars before graduation. It sounds ambitious, but their unrelenting conviction makes you a believer. Despite limited resources, these students are leveraging their skills to create services and products for a global audience, turning challenges into stepping stones. 🌐 A Call to Support and Collaborate Their journey is a powerful reminder of how education can transform lives, especially when combined with the right tools and opportunities. Let's think about how we can support such initiatives, whether through mentorship, investment, or technology partnerships. If the students reach out to interview you, say "YES!" As I left the school, I carried with me not just fond memories but a renewed belief in the power of determination and vision.
