Sensory Stories #55: Sensory Intelligence® and Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease This weekend, Marieta visited a family member in a specialized care facility for individuals with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The experience brought to light the critical role of sensory processing in caring for those with mental health challenges. Dementia is a broad term for cognitive decline, with Alzheimer's being its most common form. It affects memory, communication, and overall cognitive function, making care a complex process. Whether you’re a caregiver or a visitor, understanding sensory needs is essential for meaningful interactions and effective long-term care. Watch the video as Marieta shares her sensory insights on how to enhance the time spent with loved ones diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other mental health conditions. https://lnkd.in/d3_BXnMk #sensoryintelligence #7senses #alzheimer #alzheimersawareness #dementia #disorientated #calm #tone #voice #approach #deeppressure #carer #breaks #wellness #checkin #mentalhealth #sensoryprocessing

Cognitive impairment doesn’t always mean dementia. Some conditions, including nutrient deficiencies, medication side effects, or mental health issues, may interfere with cognition and mimic dementia, however, they are reversible with early identification and appropriate treatment. Understanding that cognitive symptoms may stem from treatable sources not only alleviates fear but also empowers individuals to take meaningful steps toward sustaining cognitive health. #cognition #dementia #cognitivehealth

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a stage between normal aging and dementia, marked by cognitive decline that doesn't majorly disrupt daily life. Understanding MCI's risk factors helps develop preventive strategies. These include modifiable lifestyle elements, chronic conditions, and sociodemographic variables studied globally. Lifestyle Factors Physical inactivity raises MCI risk, while regular exercise has a protective role (He et al., 2024; Wang et al., 2023). Unhealthy behaviors like smoking and excessive alcohol intake contribute to MCI by worsening vascular/metabolic health (Duan et al., 2023; Jacob et al., 2017). Social isolation and low cognitive engagement are also significant risks; conversely, staying socially and mentally active lowers MCI risk (Wang et al., 2023; He et al., 2024). Chronic Health Conditions Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease elevate MCI risk via vascular damage impairing cognition (Lu et al., 2022; Burke et al., 2018). Depression and anxiety, especially late-life depression, also predict MCI (Gallagher et al., 2018; Jacob et al., 2017). Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea correlate with cognitive decline, emphasizing addressing sleep in aging adults (Liu et al., 2019; Jacob et al., 2017). Sociodemographic and Genetic Factors Lower education is linked to higher MCI risk, as education may bolster cognitive reserve (Owolabi et al., 2023; Jin et al., 2023). Age and gender also play roles, with aging increasing MCI risk and some studies noting a higher prevalence among women (Gallagher et al., 2018; Jin et al., 2023). Genetic predispositions, like APOE-ε4, and ethnic factors, such as elevated risk in African Americans due to genetic, lifestyle, and socioeconomic influences, further contribute (Duan et al., 2023; Burke et al., 2018). Alzheimer's disease and dementia are critical topics, especially during Brain Awareness Month. Raising awareness about the various causes of dementia, including reversible ones like depression, is vital. Studies show that early diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as depression, particularly in older adults, can significantly preserve cognitive function and quality of life. Alzheimer's devastates millions, stripping memories and identities and causing profound grief for families. This relentless condition erodes mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and isolation. As friends, family, and mental health providers, through compassion and empathy, we can transform the journey, providing hope and dignity for those affected. #Alzheimer #Alzheimerawareness #mentalhealth

🌍💜 On this World Alzheimer's Day, we honor those living with Alzheimer's and the caregivers who tirelessly support them. Alzheimer's affects more than memory—it can also impact mental health, leading to feelings of confusion, anxiety, and depression for those diagnosed. Providing compassionate care that nurtures emotional well-being is crucial for their quality of life. Caregivers play an essential role, offering not only physical care but also emotional support. It’s important to recognize the mental health needs of both those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Simple acts of connection and understanding can make a difference. As a legal advisor in Wills & Probate, I find that my biggest obstacle in my appointments is talking about the need to create a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) earlier rather than later. Most of my clients assume that a Lasting Power of Attorney can wait until they turn more elderly due to the higher risks of developing dementia and alzheimer’s. It is very risky to have this mindset as it is hard to predict when/if someone is going to lose mental capacity. An LPA can be a really important document to have on standby for people who suffer from long term mental health problems or who are at risk of being involved in an accident causing brain injury. The article below explains this in more detail👇🏻 #MentalHealthAwareness, #ActionforBrainInjury #DementiaActionWeek #lastingpowersofattorney Alzheimer's Society Mind Headway - the brain injury association Best Solicitors
To mark dementia action, mental health, and action for brain injury awareness weeks, we revisit three scenarios when a lasting power of attorney (LPA) might be helpful. We spoke to Alzheimer's Society, Mind and Headway - the brain injury association and asked them when they think someone may need an LPA. Major life transitions can feel like a series of storms hitting seniors with great gusto. Untreated chronic stress or depression can increase the rate of dementia SIGNIFICANTLY. These transitions can be reason to seek counseling through local senior services or through telehealth. Examples include: *Retirement *Medical diagnosis *Moving to a senior living or assisted living community *Losing independence *Loss of spouse, family member or close friends Are you connecting seniors with resources trained to guide seniors in mindful practices to boost mental wellness? Don't discount seniors when it comes to screening & treating depression. Their snow globe must settle to lower this risk. Let's review: The Brain's conveyor belt for incoming data - 1st stop Amygdala or the emotional center. 2nd stop - Prefrontal Cortex (PFC). We must train the PFC to override unuseful emotional reactions. Teenagers don't have a fully developed PFC and seniors could be losing inhibition just with age meaning the ability to override the emotional center drops. How are we educating seniors about mindful practices? #BrainHealthGerontologist #ILoveYourBrain #MemoryLaneGames

LPAs are invaluable documents for all adults to have, no matter how old (or young) they are. LPAs are also really useful for business owners. They can be done online but often that comes with delays as a result of errors so it’s best to get a solicitor to help.

I firmly believe that brain health is THE primary outcome we all need to focus on. It's what allows us to enjoy life, experience it for all it is, and participate most meaningfully in each day. Yet for all this, most people ignore their brain states until its far harder to right the ship. If you'd like to hear my take on the most practical ways for each of us to protect our brains, check out my conversation with Erica Lippy! #brainhealth #dementia #depression https://lnkd.in/g8vKuutY
